2024 Thursday Door & Monday Window #15

This is my Fifteenth & Final installment of my combination of Thursday Doors & Monday Window featuring Antique Automobiles.

My dad loved cars shows, history, and anything to do with FORD. He started working for a FORD dealership while in high school in Great Falls, South Carolina. He worked there until he joined the United States Navy in 1948. After leaving the Navy, he again went to work for a FORD dealership. This time he worked of Pearson Ford in San Diego, California and continued working for FORD until he retired.

This week I’ll be showing three Antique Automobiles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1910 Haynes Runabout

The Haynes Automobile Company, better known as Haynes, was an American automotive manufacturer that was established in 1905. The company produced a range of cars that included open and closed top offerings such as the Light Six and Light Twelve. Haynes was operational until 1924, when the company declared bankruptcy, before being entirely dissolved in 1925.

1909 Oakland Model 40 Touring

The Oakland Motor Car Company located out of Pontiac, Michigan was an American automobile manufacturer and a division of General Motors. The company was named for Oakland County, Michigan where it was based. The first Oakland used a vertical two-cylinder engine that rotated counterclockwise. The Oakland’s were first produced in 1908 with a production of 278 vehicles. General Motors acquired the rights to the Oakland just one year later in 1909. GM continued production of the Oakland automobiles until 1931.

1909 ALCO 40HP Runabout

The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) was found in 1901. The company was successful in manufacturing locomotives which included massive steam trains that traversed America. Having succeeded in producing locomotives, the company began to build automobiles in 1905. They boasted that their vehicles were so well built that each one took 19 months to complete. In 1909 and 1910, ALCO won the Vanderbilt Cup, and it competed in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911.

This car is one of 12 surviving Alcos and one of still fewer propelled by a 487 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine with dual-chain drive to the rear wheels. It resided at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum from 1961 through 2011, when it was purchased by its current owner.

2024 CWWC: My Which Way — Any Paved Road with cars, people, and/or snow

For this the last week of September and I light of the Effects of Hurricane Helene, I have chosen to choose a theme of Any Paved Roads where I am focusing on Paved Roads in Germany. I am challenging everyone to participate in this week’s Which Way Challenge by sharing your Paved Roads.

In the Winter of December 1978/January 1979 my parents flew over to Germany to visit my brother & his family. [My brother was stationed there for a few years while serving in the United States Air Force.]

Shown above are just a few of the Paved Roads my parents rode on while visiting with my brother in Germany. What kind of Paved Roads will you find to share with us? I hope y’all will share your Which Ways with us. Looking forward to Cee taking the Which Way Challenge back on in October.

Thank you for visiting and sharing my parents memories with me. They enjoyed their time in Germany, however, I do not recall seeing their slide photos before I began digitizing my Dad’s slides.

2024 Thursday Door & Monday Window #13

This is my Thirteenth installment of my combination of Thursday Doors & Monday Window featuring Antique Automobiles.

This week we are continuing with Antique Automobiles from the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation with four Antique Automobiles from 1903 – 1952. Displaying the Antique Automobiles from most recent to oldest.

1952 Hudson Hornet
1940 Chrysler Crown Imperial

An interesting fact about this 1940 Chrysler Crown Imperial is that it was an Official Parade Car which carried VIPs through New York City for almost 20 years.

It carried more than a hundred dignitaries including politicians, military leaders, diplomats. They rode in the car in ticker-tape parades through Manhattan’s famed “Canyon of Heroes.” Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ralph Bunche, Winston Churchill and A. Philip Randolph were just some of the parade car’s many distinguished passengers.

1938 Lincoln Model K
1903 Packard Model F “Old Pacific”

This 1903 Packard Model F is known as “Old Pacific.” In 1903 it became the second car to cross the United States.

Hope you enjoyed seeing the Antique Automobiles from the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Next week I’ll be showing Automobiles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana. Till next time, stay safe. Stay Strong. Stay Enthusiastic and Stay Positive.

Road Trippin’ USA #6

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Pima Air & Space Museum

And Westward

In the Summer of 1985, my parents went Road Trippin’ across the United States of America. They began their Road Trip leaving from their home in San Diego, California. They always planned what or whom they wanted to visit ahead of time.

This week I’m continuing with their Road Trippin’ adventures for My Which Way of Cee’s Which Way Challenge in Tucson, Arizona at the Pima Air & Space Museum.

Last week we saw some of the sights my parents visited at the U.S. Air Force Academy. When they left Colorado behind to continue on their Road Trippin’ USA adventures, they drove south into New Mexico before continuing westward towards their home in San Diego, California.

On their way driving south to New Mexico, they stopped at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Montrose, Colorado.

Here are a couple of photos of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park they viewed from the North Rim of the Canyon. I’m sure besides enjoying the views, they were glad to stretch the legs before they proceeded driving again.

Next stop for them was to visit the Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Onward and Westward, they continued driving westward upon leaving Carlsbad, New Mexico with one final stop before finishing their Road Trippin’ USA adventure. Their next and final stop before arriving back home was to tour the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

Thank you for tagging along with me on my parents Road Trippin’ USA Adventures. Cee will be back soon (I think beginning in October). Please continue showing us your which way adventures. Have a fantastic weekend.

Road Trippin’ USA #5

Which Ways

St. Louis, Missouri

And Westward

In the Summer of 1985 my parents went Road Trippin’ across the United States of America. They began their Road Trip leaving from their home in San Diego, California. They always planned what or whom they wanted to visit ahead of time.

This week I’m continue with their Road Trippin’ adventures for My Which Way of Cee’s Which Way Challenge in St. Louis, Missouri.

Last week we saw my parents driving southbound from Indianapolis, Indiana after they completed their tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today, we are taking a look first around St. Louis, Missouri and then we’ll continue on their westward journey.

St. Louis, Missouri:

The first stop they made was in St. Louis was at the Gateway Arch National Park. At the Gateway Arch they were able to take a tram ride to the top. The tram lifts you up 630 feet up to the top of the tallest monument in the United States.

While there they also visited the Gateway Arch Museum and later took a Riverboat Dinner Cruise on a 19-century paddle-wheel riverboat. They rode on the Tom Sawyer Riverboat along the Mississippi River seeing stunning views of the skyline. It was a unique and relaxing way for them to experience seeing the Gateway Arch and downtown St. Louis.

Next up on their Road Trippin’ USA Adventure was to drive westward to the U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY has many sites and facilities available for visitors to see on a self-guided tour. Their visit stop at the Academy was the Barry Goldwater Visitor Center, here they explored the resources available to help them with their tour.

Among the many various facilities they were able to visit were the Planetarium, the Cadet Chapel, Honor Court, Polaris Hall, Arnold Hall, Dolittle Hall, Falcon Stadium, and Thunderbird Overlook. The Cadet Chapel is located at the base of the Chapel Trail. From the Chapel Trail, they were able to view the historical statues and sculptures on displayed at the Honor Court. The U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY’s Gift Shop is located on the second floor of Doolittle Hall, which I’m sure they bought souvenirs to bring home.

Next week I’ll continue with their Road Trippin’ adventures for My Which Way of Cee’s Which Way Challenge. We’ll begin in New Mexico and venture onto visiting the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

Last week I will began posting Antique Automobiles from Washington D.C. and this week we are at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan.

First Ford Mustang

My dad loved cars shows, history, and anything to do with FORD. He started working for a FORD dealership while in high school in Great Falls, South Carolina. He worked there until he joined the United States Navy in 1948. After leaving the Navy, he again went to work for a FORD dealership. This time he worked of Pearson Ford in San Diego, California and continued working for FORD until he retired.

This is the First Mustang to roll off the assembly line. It is on display at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan.

I have always loved Ford Mustangs, however, the closest I ever came to owning one was a toy orange mustang Ford came out with back in the 60’s.

I’d love a ride in a Ford Mustang; anyone want to Pull Up a Seat & ride along with me. [This one is NOT for riding in though.] We could ride in a different FORD, but it wouldn’t be the same as riding along the Pacific Coast Highway in an Antique FORD Mustang.

Last week I will began posting Antique Automobiles from Washington D. C. and now continuing on from the East Coast before moving on to Dearborn, Michigan.

This week I decided to post photos of antique automobiles from the Rohr Museum of Antique Cars. I am not sure if this museum was apart of the National Museum of American History’s Smithsonian Automobile Collection in Washington D.C. or a separate museum possibly in Manassas, Virginia. I have googled the museum but cannot find any information regarding the Rohr Antique Automobile Museum. I do know my parents toured the National Museum of American History in D.C. and then drove through Manassas to my brother’s home before driving to Dearborn, Michigan.

In these photos you can see the Virginia license plates and the Rohr Museum Antique Cars sign hanging near a window. Next week I’ll be showing antique automobiles and such from Dearborn, Michigan. Stay tuned for further adventures into the Antique Automobile World.

Road Trippin’ USA #2

Which Ways

Washington D.C.

In the Summer of 1985 my parents went Road Trippin’ across the United States of America. They began their Road Trip leaving from their home in San Diego, California. They always planned what or whom they wanted to visit ahead of time.

On the road again, their next planned stop was in Washington D.C. after a side visit to my brother near Manassas, Virginia. My parents toured many of the historical sites and monuments around the area. Some of the sites were seen via a tour bus while others were seen via self-guided walking tour routes. They toured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Building, the National Museum of American History, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, The Smithsonian Castle, Capitol Hill and the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial Statue. What would be your interests if you toured Washington D.C. or your country’s Capitol?

Here you may see some of the Roads, Routes, or Pathways they took on their tour of D.C.:

The last photo isn’t exactly a pathway unless you consider going round and round on a merry-go-round one you’d also enjoy taking on occasion.,

Next week I’ll continue with their Road Trippin’ adventures for My Which Way of Cee’s Which Way Challenge

2024 Thursday Doors & Monday Window #8

This is my Eighth installment of my combination of Thursday Doors & Monday Window featuring Antique Automobiles. For the past seven weeks I’ve been posting Antique Automobiles from California. This week I will begin posting Antique Automobiles from Washington D. C. and then moving on to Dearborn, Michigan.

Today’s featured Antique Automobile comes from the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C..

Willys MB

U.S. military vehicle of WW II

“Jeep”

714 ORD-2
USA 717-S

The Willys MB was formally called the U.S. Army truck, 1/4-ton, 4×4, command reconnaissance. It was commonly known as the Willys Jeep, Jeep, or jeep. The Willys Jeeps were highly successful American off-road capable, light military utility vehicles.

There were greater than 600,000 Willy MB built to a single standardized design, for the United States and the Allied forces in World War II, from 1941 until 1945. It was highly regarded, by Dwight D. Eisenhower, as one of the five pieces of equipment most vital to success in Africa and Europe. In 1991, the MB Jeep was designated an  “International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark” by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

After World War II, the original Jeep continued to serve in the Korean War as well as other conflicts until updates were done with the M38 Willys MC in 1949and later the M38A1 Willys MD in 1952.

Interestingly enough, the Willys Jeep was the inspiration for recreational 4WDs and SUVs, making “four-wheel drive” a household term, and numerous incarnations of military light utility vehicles.

Apotheosis of Washington in U.S. Capital’s Rotunda

The Apotheosis of Washington is located in the eye of the U.S. Capital Building’s Rotunda in Washington D.C.. It was painted by Constantino Brumidi in 1865. The painting depicts George Washington rising to the heavens in glory, flanked by female figures representing Liberty and Victory/Fame and surrounded by six groups of figures.

The Apotheosis of Washington was painted in the true fresco technique. Constantino Brumidi was born and trained in Rome; having already painted in the Vatican and Roman palaces prior to emigrating to the United States in 1852. He was a master of creating the illusion of three-dimensional forms and figures on flat walls. He painted frescoes and murals throughout the Capitol from 1855 until his death.

The Apotheosis of Washington, was painted in eleven (11) months at the end of the civil war. A rainbow arches at George Washington’s feet and thirteen maidens symbolizing the original states flank the three central figures.

George Washington, The United States of America’s first president, had a substantial impact on the nation. He never actually graced the halls of the United States Capital, however, his presence, influence, and his likeness is everywhere. There are approximately thirty-five (35) pieces of art which include Washington’s likeness in the U.S. Capitol.

Road Trippin’ USA #1

Which Ways

Petersburg National Battlefield

Petersburg, Virginia

In the Summer of 1985 my parents went Road Trippin’ across the United States of America. They began their Road Trip leaving from their home in San Diego, California. They always planned what or whom they wanted to visit ahead of time.

On this Road Trip, their first stop was to visit my dad’s sister in Charlotte, North Carolina. That stop was a brief visit; a time of relaxation before continuing on their long journey they had planned for themselves.

Their first planned stop after leaving my Aunt and Uncle’s home was to visit the Petersburg National Battlefield in Petersburg, Virginia. These are a few of the sights they saw while walking around the battlefield grounds and trails.

Next week I’ll continue with their Road Trippin’ adventures for My Which Way of Cee’s Which Way Challenge.

Smithsonian Castle

And

Joseph Henry Statue

This was one of the many stops on my parents cross country vacation during the summer of 1985. They visited The Smithsonian Institution Building on their Washington D. C. Tour.

The Smithsonian Institution Building is
Aka Smithsonian Castle, The Castle

The Castle was the first Smithsonian Building. It was designed by architect James Renwick Jr. and built between 1847 and 1855 to house the Smithsonian Institution, which was established by Congress in 1846. It was designed in the Norman Revival style, which combines late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs. It is made up of Seneca red sandstone from the Seneca Quarry in Montgomery County, Maryland.

of
Joseph Henry Statue

The Joseph Henry Statue is located at the entrance of the Smithsonian Institution Building, or “Castle.” Joseph Henry was the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1846 to 1878. The bronze statue of him was commissioned in 1880 and installed in 1883. At its installation it faced the Smithsonian Building (The Castle.) In 1965, the bronze statue was turned to face the National Mall.
