2023 SYW: Week of October 30th

Here are this week’s questions (which are nothing to do with Halloween):

  1. Do you have carpets, rugs, laminating flooring, tiles, or wooden floors (or something else) in your property? Considering the property I live in is a rental townhome, the main areas are all carpeted, the kitchen & bathrooms have laminate flooring. If I had my preference, the entire home would have wood flooring with absolutely no carpeted whatsoever.
  2. Do you have a bathtub and separate shower, or a combination of the two? The master bathroom has a shower only, the other main bathroom has a combination of bathtub and shower. We installed our own shower-heads as we prefer to have adjustable settings to use at our convenience. There is also a downstairs bathroom without a bathtub or shower facilities.
  3. What is your favourite room of the house, and why? I am inclined to say that my favourite room in the house is my bedroom even the the majority of my time is spent in the living downstairs taking care of my grandson. The reason my bedroom is my favorite room is because it is the place of peace and tranquility for me. It is a place where I can relax, think, read and write without distractions or interruptions.
  4. How many televisions do you have? There are three televisions in our home. One in the living room, one in the master bedroom, and one in my room. Although I rarely watch television in my room. I prefer to read or write my thoughts down sometimes on paper and other times through my blogging. I like to upload my photography and share them with y’all.

2023 SYW: Week of October 23

Here are this week’s questions about shopping habits:

1. When food shopping, do you prefer to shop online or in person?

Since 2020 I do most of my shopping online and have my items delivered including groceries. I rarely into any kind of store anymore and when I do it’s because I need something sooner than I could possibly have it delivered.

2. Do you take/stick to a shopping list?

Considering I do the majority of my shopping on line, I go through the pantry and refrigerator/freezer and order those items I truly need and not want I might desire.

3. Do you shop around or are you store loyal for convenience?

I order mostly from my local Harris Teeter (Grocery Store) and from Walmart. I shop what is on sale at Harris Teeter and other items, which may be cheaper, I order from Walmart. There are a few cleaning supplies I order online from Home Depot and have the delivered the same day.

4. Roughly how long does it take you to do a weekly shop?

When ordering online, it takes me less than an hour. However, if you count when I periodically add items to my shopping cart before ordering it could vary dramatically.

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Do you prefer a duvet, quilt or sheets and blankets on your bed?

I prefer to use sheets, blankets, and Quilts on my bed. The Quilts I use were lovingly sewn and stitched together by the skilled and talented hands of my beloved maternal grandmother.

2. Do you sleep with one or two pillows?

The only time I ever used only one or two pillows was as a child in my parents home. Now I use at least four pillows on my bed. I currently have six pillows on my bed.

3. Do you prefer a single, double, or kingsize bed?

I have never had a king size bed, not even when my spouse & I shared a bed. I have slept in a twin as an adult ( my husband was an over-the-road truck driver and hardly ever home). So upon moving, I slept in a twin and saved money for a larger bed. I have also had full-size (double) beds and queen size beds. The Queen size was nice, but since it is only me now, a queen would be more room than I really need. Therefore, I currently sleep in a full-size bed with my six pillows, top & bottom sheets, four blankets and one quilt covering me each and every night.

4. In the winter, do you have a hot water bottle or an electric blanket?

Many a winter I have used an electric blanket to keep me warm at night. Even while living in campgrounds for six months out of a year, I had an electric blanket over me while I slept on an air mattress in a tent through 30° winter weather. I mostly used it to keep my feet warm throughout the cold winter nights.

5. Fun question: have you ever slept in a hammock?

I have never slept in a hammock. Slept on the ground or on an air mattress in a sleeping bag, but never in a hammock.

2023 SYW: Week of October 16

This week’s questions I’ve needed to think about prior to answering, the last two especially. Anyway, here are my responses to the questions. I’ll be looking forward to seeing y’all’s responses to this week’s Share Your World questions.

Here are this week’s questions:

  1. What is your favourite dessert? I’m not sure that I have favourite dessert. This time of year I do enjoy a delicious pumpkin 🎃 pie 🥧. However, if I had the time and my grandson wasn’t lactose intolerant, I would bake and eat My Grandfather’s Favorite cookies. [That’s the actual name of the cookies passed down from my maternal grandmother.] The recipe calls for using sour milk. Growing up my mom always used buttermilk instead of sour milk. With this recipe one could make two different types of cookies. One type is filled with a raisin filling and another is made using cookie 🍪 cutter and iced and decorated as desired however one might desire.
  2. Do you still use cash to pay for goods? I hardly ever use cash to pay for anything anymore. Most of the time I’ll pay by a debit or card card. I also barely use the actual physical card to make purchases, most of the time it is a digital card to make online purchases or pay via apple or Walmart pay.
  3. Apart from a house, car or holiday, what is the most expensive thing you’ve purchased? The most expensive thing I’ve ever purchased was my Canon EOS Rebel T3i camera and lens combination from Sam’s Club years ago. I bought it as a gift to myself as a birthday present. It’s one of the best if not the best present I have ever bought myself.
  4. If you are going out for a special occasion, what is your favoured outfit? Currently, I do not have a favored outfit. I do not recall ever having a favorite outfit I would wear. I haven’t been out for any special occasion since Covid-19 began in 2020.

2023 SYW: Week of September 11

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Do you like change?

No, I do not care for change. Change of seasons is expected, however, I would prefer to have spring or fall weather year-round. But then I would need to move to even come close to that happening. As far as other types of changes I would prefer not to have change, but if change was necessary then I would plan ahead and prepare myself accordingly for the upcoming change.

2. Can you remember the last time you had to use an operator service?

No, I cannot remember the last time I had to use an operator service. Now if you are referring to an automated customer service, then that is a different story. I hate automated customer service lines when you do not get the opportunity to speak with an actual person or have to go through a tremendous number of loops before the automation will transfer you to a live person. In that case, it would have been last month.

3. What is the best and worst ‘hold’ music you have had to listen to?

I would not know what the best or worst ‘hold’ music I had to listen to would have been. I tend to not listen to any ‘hold’ music.

4. Do you find numerous ‘options’ annoying when connected to an automated service?

Definitely. As stated previously, I abhor automated service regardless of whether it is automated customer service or any other kind. I would prefer to speak with a person whenever I had a problem or circumstance which needed attention immediately in order to be resolved.

Here are this week’s questions:

  1. How do you get on with your in-laws/partner’s family? Unfortunately, they are no longer around, and neither is my spouse. when were we first married, we got along well with one another but after we moved to a different state we drifted apart.
  2. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? I am not sure what the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. While I was working, I was always told I was dependable. Since I’ve been retired no one says much at all except for What’s for supper? Even so, I think the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me was “I love you!”
  3. What was your favourite ride/stall at a fun fair? It has been an extremely long time since I attended a fun fair. In fact, I do not think I have visited one since I was in my late teens. In the 1960’s my dad entered his model cars for display. He had some first-place ribbons for his model car displays. I do not ever remember going on any of the rides, only going through the exhibition halls looking over all the many various exhibits.
  4. Would you like to be a child growing up in today’s world? No, I would not like to be a child growing up in today’s world. Growing up without technology, being free to roam the neighborhoods without fear of violence was a wonderful time period in my life. It was a life of enjoying the outdoors and not glued to a phone, a computer, or anything. Loved riding my bike of handmade skateboard outside (No helmet necessary back then).

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Do you have a favourite time of year?

My favorite time of year is Springtime. I love to watch everything come back to life; the flowers beginning to bloom, the leaves 🍃 appearing all green and glowing, the birds returning singing their beautiful songs, the bees 🐝 feasting on flowers everywhere (except I don’t like them on me, I’m allergic to them). Autumn isn’t bad with all the fall colors as the leaves are turning red, orange and yellow. The fall colors make for beautiful landscape begging to be photographed.

2. What is your happiest memory?

I have many happy memories; not sure which memory I would select to be my happiest memory. I have happy memories of family vacations, visiting my dad’s family in the Carolinas (We lived in San Diego and would travel by car every three to five years to visit them.) Fun times at church summer camps; spending time at the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park (It is now called San Diego Zoo Safari Park). Giving birth to my children; the list could go on and on. How can I choose just one to be my happiest memory? I am sorry, I just cannot.

3. If you could change something about yourself, what would it be?

If I could change something about myself; what’s the point I know I could never change anything about myself. Not really, only the Lord Jesus Christ can change me from within. He has the power to make be a more compassionate, understanding, and loving person from within allowing His spirit to shine through me.

4. Are you a tidy person (ie. everything in its place), or do you prefer a bit of clutter?

I would not consider myself to prefer clutter, but then again everything isn’t spotless and super neat. I know where everything is, and everything is in its rightful place (at least according to me).

I have been fishing. Not very often and hardly ever hit more than a few.

2. Do you prefer to watch football, rugby, tennis or hockey on TV?

None of the above. I typically do not watch any kind of sports on TV.

3. Have you ever ice skated?

I have ice skated in my youth, however, I was never very good at it.

4. Did you enjoy sports at school?

I enjoyed watching my high school football team play. Go Cardinals! I also loved to play Tennis 🎾.

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Do you use a feather duster for cleaning?

I think I have a swifter feather duster somewhere, but with the last move in February I’m not sure where it is. Therefore, I just use a soft cloth for now.

2. Do you use a washing liquid, ‘ball’ thingie or washing powder?

I use a powder laundry detergent. In my opinion, it works better and lasts longer than liquid laundry detergent. I don’t care for laundry pods or anything similar. I have used a laundry bar soap previously especially for hand washing.

3. Do you own anything that has to be hand washed?

I currently do not own anything that requires hand washing. When my children were little and in diapers I would hand wash the cloth diapers I used and hang them out to dry on a clothesline.

4. Do you use, or have you ever used, a laundry service?

I currently do not use a laundry, however, I have taken clothes to a dry cleaners previously. When my daughter was in high school I took her ROTC uniform to the dry cleaners & also her prom/ROTC Ball gowns to be cleaned.

Here are this week’s questions:

  1. Does your kitchen have a pantry or utility room? Our present kitchen has a pantry closet. It’s not very big but it suffices for now.
  2. How good are you at DIY? No, I am not too good at DIY’s. However, my daughter is very talented at DIY’s.
  3. Does your home lack something you wish it had? (ie. an open fire, second bathroom, garage, etc). My home lacks being a house. It is an apartment and doesn’t have the same appeal or feel to it when we lived in a house. Other than that, it does not have an area where I can set up my sewing machine to work on projects I’d like to do. It also doesn’t have a garage, but as an adult I have never had a garage. It would be nice though.
  4. Are you an early bird or night owl? I am definitely a night owl. Despite that fact my grandson wakes me up early every morning. I tend to be awake late at night when our place is extremely quiet and peaceful. That is the time when I am able to accomplish most of my thinking, blogging, reading and relaxing.

2023 SYW: Week of July 31

Share Your World

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Expensive or sentimental, what is priceless to you? For me, what is priceless is the memories made with family and friends. Memories of trips we’ve taken, activities we shared, and the love we had/have for each other.

Now if you’re interested in objects, it is not the expensive but rather the sentimental value of an object that makes it priceless to me. For example, I have a shelf unit that, for me, it irreplaceable. Why is it irreplaceable? It is because of the sentimental value attached to it. Why is it sentimental? It is sentimental since my dad made it for me, out of love, with his own two hands.

2. What do you consider to be ‘a quiet night in’?
A “quiet night in” would, for me, require complete quiet. A quiet evening for me to read, blog, or just chill. Most often I alternate between reading and blogging and completing my thoughts so I am better able to communicate what’s on my mind and heart.

3. Do you believe in Soul Mates?
I’m sure many people believe in soul mates, however, if they exist I do not think I’ve ever truly found mine. I had someone whom I thought was a life partner but it didn’t turn out to be a reality for me.

4. Can you dance? (for example: old time, disco, jive)
Dancing is something I have not done too much of and not at all such my husband and I split years ago. I grew up in a church that did not approve of dancing, thinking it inappropriate behavior. After I moved out of the family home in my early twenties, I did go to places where dancing took place a few times. The type of dancing I used to do was the country two-step. I can still remember dancing with my husband and how it made me feel.

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Do you prefer a sofa (aka couch, settee) or an armchair to relax in? I’ve almost always have sat on a couch to relax in. However, my preference is to relax in a Rocker Recliner, where I can have the options of sitting, rocking, or reclining.

2. Do you prefer to sit at a table to eat your meals, or on a tray?
I grew up always sitting at a table for meals. Since being on my own, I have not always had a table and chairs to being able to sit at to eat my meals. Therefore, I have used a tv table tray to eat my meals.

3. Do you enjoy a glass of wine with your main meal?
No, I do not enjoy a glass of wine with my main meal or any meal. I have never been a wine drinker and gave up drinking any kind of alcohol many years ago.

4. How do you like your chips (aka fries), with salt, sauce, mayo or something else?
I rarely eat chips or fries of any kind. However, one the slim chance that I would eat them I would eat them plain and unsalted.

Here are this week’s questions:

1. How do you like your coffee/tea? I’m an iced tea drinker. I drink unsweetened tea. I keep water in the fridge (not commercially bottled) to make my tea and I don’t actually put ice in it. Sometimes I will add flavoring like peach 🍑, mango 🥭, or raspberry.

2. Are you a dunker (of biscuits/cookies)? I am not a dunker of any kind. I never felt the need to soften biscuits or cookies and certainly don’t like anything of any sort in any of my drinks.

3. What is your favourite biscuit/cookie? My favourite biscuits are Honey-butter biscuits. My favorite cookies are simply called “Grandfather’s Favorites. They are a homemade cookie made from my grandmother’s recipe.

4. Have you ever baked your own biscuits/cookies? Yes, I have baked my own homemade biscuits and cookies. Unfortunately, my favorite homemade cookies I do not bake much right now because my grandson is lactose intolerant and it calls for sour milk. Normally buttermilk has been substituted for the sour milk.

SYW: 2023 July 3rd

Here are this week’s questions:

  1. Do you own your own home, rent, or something else? Technically, I would have to say where I live is something else. I do not own it. I do not give “money” per say to live here. However, I do give of myself, my time, and my love. You see, I live with my daughter and grandson. I take care of (watch) him 24/7 so my daughter can work. I do all the cooking, laundry, cleaning, and childcare. I contribute to the needs of my grandson, (food and clothing) and try to help my daughter Amy way I can with my limited resources.
  2. What is your favourite ‘go to’ food when you’re feeling under par? I’m not sure that I have a favorite ‘Go to’ food for when I’m feeling under par. If I’m hungry and too exhausted to cook, I tend to fix a tuna fish sandwich. I do not munch just because I’m feeling low. Most days I cook three meals a day regardless of how I’m feeling. After all I will do whatever is in my power to make sure nutritional needs of my grandson are met daily.
  3. Do you indulge retail therapy? No, I believe in only ordering/ buying what I absolutely need. It takes me a lot of time and consideration before I splurge and buy something I desire. Most times I need to justify the purchase to myself buying ordering anything.
  4. How many pairs of shoes do you own? 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of tennis shoes, 1 pair of sandals and 1 pair of slip on clogs. That adds up to a total of 4 pairs of shoes which I own.

Di’s questions for this week:

  1. What colour are you wearing today? Right now I am wearing a Green Til Valhalla 22 a Day shirt. It supports ending Veteran Suicide .
  2. Will you be cooking lunch today, having something cold, or going out to eat? Before I get into lunch, let me share our breakfast. Today’s breakfast ( Coleman’s 2nd meal) is homemade apple cinnamon “hoho” mini waffles. I make them using Bisquick, instant apple cinnamon oatmeal, 1 egg, unsweetened applesauce, oil, and cinnamon sugar. I bought a Christmas tree mini waffle iron at Christmas time which Coleman refers to as the “Hoho” maker. He wants “HoHo’s” every day. However, I don’t cook them everyday. I vary his meals. I said they were his 2nd breakfast because he always wakes up hungry & I’m not fully awake when he is. So, I fix him fresh fruit and/or cereal or dairy free yogurt before I cook his hot breakfast.
  3. Does hot weather drain your strength or agree with you? I adore warm weather. I prefer it to not be too hot, but definitely not cold. It is not the hot weather that is draining my strength but the humidity that comes along with it on some hot summer days. The heat and humidity is only bothersome when Coleman and I are out hiking in the woods or on a greenway ( which is usually still among the trees and near a river or a lake. At those times the perspiration from the humidity is consistently needing to be wiped away so I can see. However, that doesn’t prevent us from enjoying and completing our hikes.
  4. Do you have air conditioning in your property? Currently we have air conditioning. I have lived without air conditioning for most of my life. I actually ( and I know I might be unusual in this) prefer not to have air conditioning. In my line of thinking, air conditioners tend to circulate air borne pollutants and dust that aggravate my sinuses. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy cool air or cool weather. I love to feel a cool cross breeze throughout the home from open windows. The lovely scent of fresh air is calming to my senses.

1. If you could reinvent yourself, how would you like to be? I’m not sure by how I would reinvent myself. If I reinvented myself I wouldn’t be where I am today or enjoying adventures with my grandson.

2. Would you like to be a pet in your household? No, I would not like to be a pet in my household. I would not like to make messes or rummage through the garbage like the dogs do here.

3. How many house moves have you had as an adult? As an adult I have moved to sixteen different houses or apartments in four different states. That does not count the times I have lived in a tent in various campgrounds.

4. What was your favourite home? Choosing a favorite home can be difficult. There are things about various homes I enjoyed & things I didn’t almost about each one. Like my first apartment with my husband. We went there very long but we were all together and spent the most time enjoying being a family.

  2.  Have you ever used a fake tan or a sun bed? No. I have never used any fake tanning lotion, spray, or other type of fake tanning. I also have never used a tanning or sun bed. what’s the point in subjecting the body to potentially harmful rays.
  3.  Have you joined or wanted to join a gym? I have joined a gym in my younger days but hadn’t until recently. I just last week joined a YMCA. I figured why not? It did not cost me anything. It is included with, my Medicare Advantage coverage.

This is my entry for Di at Pensitivity101 hosts Share Your World and here is my response for the week.

  1. Growing up, were you closer to your mother or father, or was it a balance of both depending on the circumstances? Growing up I was always closer to my dad. It was never a balance and when he passed away in 1996 apart of me was lost. What little there was between my mom and I became nonexistent sad to say.
  2. What was your favourite toy as a child, and do you still have it? I’m not sure that I had a favourite toy growing up, however, I do have a red and white stuffed monkey with a banana in one hand that I have had since I was about five years of age.
  3. Did you have any secrets? I don’t really have any secrets, but that doesn’t mean that I tell anybody and everyone about my life history. My life story is mine to tell when and if I choose.
  4. What did you want to be when you grew up, and are you anywhere close? I’m not sure if I remember what I wanted to be when I was in grade school. It might have been a teacher since I played school occasionally. The closest I came to being a teacher was being a substitute teacher for many years. In high school I thought I wanted to be a nurse and took a nurses aide class my senior year. In college I never did very well with the science classes especially anatomy and physiology. The closest I ever came to being a nurse was working as a nurses aide for a couple of years. After I got married, I became a teacher, nurse maid and many other things to my family. My oldest son has/had dyslexia and the school didn’t think it was something they Neto work with; therefore I taught him at home until he went to middle school. In my perspective, a mother (or parent) performs many diversified roles throughout their child/children’s life’s.

Share Your World: My Thoughts on Birthdays

This week Di is asking us these questions;

Here are this week’s questions:

Children aside, do you celebrate your birthday/anniversary or is it just a normal day for you?

For me, my birthday is just an ordinary normal day. It is not recognized by my children. Oh, I wish and long for acknowledgement, but henceforth it does not come and by nightfall I am disappointed.

Do/did you always give your child a birthday party when they were young?

I did not always give my children a birthday party. However, when I did it was usually just with family including cousins.

If your child was born on Christmas Day (or a few days either side of the 25th), did they have a ‘half birthday’ in June, two presents/celebrations, or something else?

None of my children were born near Christmas, but I do have a good friend and an “old” neighbor who was born the day after Christmas. If I remember right, and I might not, his parents tried to make his birthday special & not just combine his birthday with Christmas.

I do have a daughter that was born on “traditional” Memorial Day (traditional meaning before they made it always on a Monday). We tended to celebrate her birthday with the patriotic theme of red, white, and blue.

Would you prefer to give your child a party, or take them and a few friends on a special outing?

A party is nice, but also a lot of work and expense. When my children weren’t so young, I took them out to a restaurant of their choosing. I remember, in my teen years, my parents took me out for my birthday at the restaurant of my choice with cake and present(s) at home afterward.

As a side note, today’s my birthday. I spent the day with my grandson, Coleman (But then again, I usually do). We took the city transit bus into downtown. His first time on a bus ride. First time for both of us in this area (we only moved here in February). We rode the bus downtown and then walked a short distance and hiked the Highland Rail Trail. (He loves to go hiking). The paved trail was just 1.8 miles in length one way. We stopped shy of the end of the trail and walked back to the bus station to wait for the bus to return home. (Coleman was ready to go.) After my daughter got home, she insisted on us going out to eat for my birthday. We hadn’t done that in over three years. We went to a new to us restaurant called Noodles & Company. World Kitchen. It serves many different times of noodle dishes. Italian, Asian, Vegan, and more. I had the Zucchini Pesto with Grilled Chicken. It was delicious. My grandson had the kids grilled chicken, but he was too antsy to sit still and eat. (He fell asleep shortly after we got back home). I did very much appreciate her thoughtfulness. My sons couldn’t bother with acknowledging my birthday. I am thankful for my online friends new and old who sent their birthday greetings. No body wants to be forgotten on their birthday even if they don’t care for celebrations.
