What book is next on your reading list? This is from an earlier Bloganuary prompt of the day which I will now discuss. I have several books on my reading list, however, the next book I am fixing to read is entitled “Their Secret Courtship” by Emma Miller.
Thew book cover asks the following questions: “Is love enough to bridge their different worlds? Just by the cover of the book one can tell that the lady is Amish, and the man is an Englisher. There are several differences between the Amish and the non-Amish, Englishers. It is obvious, at least to me, that their clothing styles differ. Although the man is dressed modestly, he is not dressed like an Amish man would dress. Amish men usually wear dark-colored clothing. They tend to be handmade broadfall trousers they hold up using suspenders instead of belts. They wear solid-colored shirts, black socks and shoes. The lavender shirt the man on the cover is wearing would not be considered plain. It is not dark in color, and it uses snaps unlike Amish shirts which uses buttons.
Most Amish women make their own clothing from fabric purchased in local stores typically run by women in their church community. The colors of fabric used are conservative in nature, nothing bright or bold. The women usually wear aprons over their dresses. The put their hair up in a bun covering it with a small white cap. The cap is referred to as a prayer covering. It is a symbol to remind them to Pray without ceasing (T Thes. 5:17).
The Amish and the English (non-Amish) have differing belief systems. The Amish meet for worship in homes rather than in a church building. They try to live a simple life apart from the world. There are circumstances where they do interact with the English, such as in business, or if they feel the need to seek a medical doctor. Amish and English share traditional Christian beliefs, for instance the Trinity, the inerrancy of the Bible, adult baptism, atoning death of Jesus Christ, and the existence of heaven and hell. The Amish try not to be prideful but live humbly.
I am looking forward to reading this book and to find out if love can bridge their worlds together. Can their commonalities outweigh their differences? Only one way to find out and that is to get started reading the book.
