2024 Which Way Challenge (CWWC) — Which way with the colors of Silver and Gold

The Which Way Challenge (CWWC) is all about capturing the means we travel from place to place such as roads, walkways, trails, and rails. The roads could be paved or unpaved, gravel, or dirt. Walkways could cover sidewalks, hallways, or pathways. Trails are paths we travel through Greenways, Local, State, or National Parks. Also permissible are any kinds of signs and any bridge angle.

This week’s theme will be CWWC:  Which way with the colors of Silver and Gold. I will be looking forward to seeing y’all’s Which Way Challenge posts.

My entries here are from The Lindsay Pettus Greenway’s Lighting of the Greenway. Whenever Coleman and I are hiking in a Greenway, State or National Park, we do not Rush; instead we take our time strolling through the paths and trails in taking everything there is to see. Nature is amazingly beautiful and peaceful, there is never a need to Rush. Take your time, relax and enjoy your journey.

2024 My Bestie for OWS/RDP

Bestie is a person’s best friend. I had friends growing up, but I do not recall one being a bestie. I know, as an adult, have had friends that come and go, but none of them have ever been close enough to be called a bestie. Nowadays, I spend practically all my time with my grandson, Coleman. He is my hiking buddy. He and I are closer than he is with his own mom. The reason for that is most likely due to the fact that we spend the most time together as his mom works a lot to provide a place for us to live. So in a sense he is my bestie. He is not a confident, but he is someone I love and care very deeply about; someone I’d give my life to protect.

2024 OWS: 07.07 — Transport

While most will think of physical means of transport such as cars, airplanes, trains, and similar vehicles used for transportation; I am venturing into a different realm of transport.

The term transport has several different and yet similar definitions. It means an act or process of transporting; to transfer or convey from one place to another; a vehicle (such as a truck or airplane) used to transport persons or goods. It also means  to carry away with strong and often intensely pleasant emotion; strong or intensely pleasurable emotion.

Transport applies to any powerful emotion(s) that lifts one out of oneself and usually provokes vehement expression or frenzied action.

It is these last definitions in which I am applying here for my interpretation on Debbie’s One Word Sunday Prompt of Transport.

“Books are the plane, the train, = and the ROAD. They are the Destination and The Journey.they are home.”

~ ANNA QUINDLEN

When I read books 📚 I am transported into another place and time. I feel the emotions along with the characters in whichever book or story I am reading. Books take me places where I might not otherwise be able to visit, help me to learn and understand what other places and people are all about. I can envision myself there right amongst the people, whether real or imagined by the other, they all seem very real to me. I can feel and visualize the events taking place and I am instantaneously transported to another city, state, or country as if I am one with the book and its characters.

“Books take you places you hope someday to go. They transport you to time in the future or long, long ago. The words paint the pictures, the author’s canvas is your mind. Surreal images greet you, you never know what you’ll find. Books take you places, whether fantasy or real. Some tales make you laugh while others make you squeal!”

~ Kimberly Beatty

What are your thoughts on books as a means of transport? Have you ever felt as if you have been transported to another time or place when you were reading a book?

Signs to Welcome your Presence

Everywhere you go there are signs to Welcome your presence. Welcome you to come into a store, Welcome you to a town, Welcome you to a Greenway, and even Welcoming children to a Playground.

Let’s start with our Welcome to a favourite store in Amish Country, Ohio called Lehman’s. Lehman’s provides products that Amish and Englishers alike desire to purchase and meets the needs of those desiring a simpler lifestyle.

Next up is a Greenway constructed in the last five years in Lancaster. The Lindsay Pettus Greenway was intentionally designed as a hard-surface trail to ensure that people of all mobility levels can smoothly access the trail. By doing so, everyone can connect to places of interest and engage with nature. This Greenway is a place where everyone can freely enjoy over two traffic-free miles of nature in the heart of Lancaster County.

Welcome to
The Lindsay Pettus Greenway
Lancaster, South Carolina

On one of our visits to the North Carolina mountains we stayed in West Jefferson while attending a family reunion in Deep Gap. After the reunion, we walked around the Historic Downtown area of West Jefferson and discovered many interesting places and sights including the Ashe County Cheese Factory. The Ashe County Cheese is just a short ways down a side street from this sign. There you may watch cheese being made & then go straight across the road and buy some freshly made cheese in any flavour that suits your palate.

Abandoned in California — Now Tourist Attraction

Janet from sustainabilitea.wordpress.com is offering us all to participate in her “One Word Sunday” word Abandoned. I am choosing to participate, how about you?

Alcatraz

Have you ever thought about visiting or touring a federal prison? How about touring an Abandoned maximum security prison like Alcatraz? It is possible, you know.

Alcatraz was not always a maximum security prison. It was first used by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the area. The Island has been used for camping, hunting, and at one point it became an isolated and remote place where law violators were held during its history. Based on oral history of Indigenous people, it appears that Alcatraz was used as a place of isolation or ostracization for tribal members who had violated a tribal law or taboo, and was utilized also as a hiding place for many Indians attempting to escape from the California Mission system.

Alcatraz Barracks Building 64
United States Penitentiary
Alcatraz Island

Building 64 was the first building constructed on the island of Alcatraz off the coast of San Francisco, California. The purpose of Building 64 was for the accommodation of the military officers and their families living on the island. It is located next to the dock on the southeastern side of the island below the Warden’s House.  It’s a three-story apartment block that was built in 1905 on the site of a U.S. Army barracks which had been there from the 1860s. It functioned as the Military Guard Barracks from 1906 until 1933.

United States Penitentiary
Alcatraz Island

Nowadays, it is possible to tour Alcatraz. You may select from an Alcatraz Day Tour or an Alcatraz Night Tour, or the Bay Discovery Cruise, or Alcatraz Behind the Scenes Tour. All Tours except the Bay Discovery Cruise allows access via ferry onto Alcatraz Island. Each tour has its own unique itinerary and the opportunities are expanded with the Night and Behind the Scenes tours.

The Bay Discovery Cruise does not dock at Alcatraz, but does (weather permitting) encircle Alcatraz Island and provides breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Area.

These photos were taken by my dad back in 1979 when we took a Bay Discovery Cruise. The San Francisco Bay Cruise lasts for Ninety (90) minutes sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, encircling Alcatraz Island and allows for sensational views of the San Francisco Waterfront, the Presidio, Sausalito, Fort Baker, Angel Island and a lot more. [More scenes from the Bay Area Cruise coming in later posts.]

2024 OWS: Crosses from East to West

Traveling across the United States off and on over the years I have seen and visited many different locations with crosses on display.

This first cross is one Coleman and I came across as we were hiking in Westminster Park. We noticed it after we parked and started hiking. We hadn’t hiked very far before we noticed it, but we didn’t stop to check it out until we completed our hike along the Catawba River. With its location being close to the parking area we chose to save it for last. You can see spectacular views standing by the cross and looking outward towards River.

This next cross is one dear to my heart. It sits beside my 2nd great grandfather’s, John Thomas Waters, gravesite. It is the Confederate Maltese Cross. These crosses are often located on the site of those who served in the Confederate Army during the United States Civil War.

When I traveled to Texas in 2020 I came across the Discovery Center Creation Museum in Abilene. During the time I was visiting my Aunt Irene (Erma Irene Watson) I would often go out for walks about the neighborhood for exercise and to relieve my curiosity about what interesting things and places I could discover. On this particular day I discovered the Discovery Center Creation Museum. Intrigued by the sign and dinosaurs portrayed outside the building I decided to go inside and have a look around. “The Miracle of Israel” exhibit is the location for the three crosses, a representation of the Resurrection.

This last cross, the Padre Cross, is one of my favorites. Having lived in San Diego for most of my childhood I often visited El Presidio Real de San Diego. It was established on Presidio Hill on July 1, 1769.

The San Diego Presidio was built to protect the original colonist from American Indian attack and became the military headquarters for continued Spanish exploration of the interior lands, and throughout Northern California.

The San Diego Presidio is a National Historic Landmark and part of San Diego’s Presidio ParkPresidio Park enables you to walk in the footsteps of California’s early European settlers. The popular attraction is the location where Gaspar de Portola and Junipero Serra constructed the San Diego Presidio and the Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769.

The Padre Cross also known as Serra Cross was erected in 1913 and is made up of tiles from the Presidio ruins. It is located east of Presidio Drive across from the Junípero Serra Museum.

2024 OWS: Direction

Directions for Where to Go,

What to Do, & How to Act

Where to Go:

First off, let’s look out Trail Maps. Trail Maps let us know what trails are at a location and give us directions to follow for our selected trail route we desire to hike.

Next, we’ll look at Trail Signs that give Directions for which way to go to continue to a specific destination.

Continuing on, we look at trail signs which tell us the rules and how we should behave while we are on the trail. Some of the directions might seem like we should already know how to act while on a trail, but reminders are beneficial for those that need one on common courtesy.

How to Act:

Lastly, we’re looking at signs that give us directions on what we should do. Some remind us to stay Calm, others give us directions on what to do in case of an emergency, while others let us know what (or rather where) not to do.

What to Do & Not to Do:

It is almost guaranteed that while Coleman and I are out hiking along a trail, he’ll decide to sit and rest a second or two before moving on.
