Do Low Water Levels Prevent Splash-time?

We have been having so many days of extreme heat and humidity that what rain we have had has not been enough to sustain or elevate the water levels of our lakes, rivers, or spillways.

Coleman
on his way
to the Spillway

Do you think that the low water levels would hinder Coleman from enjoying splashing around in the Spillway? Definitely not.

Coleman
is almost
to the Spillway

Normally the water levels would be so high you’d be able to see the water from where Coleman is located. The water is usually all the way across the Spillway and flowing down stream.

Coleman deciding
whether we are crossing
the Swinging Bridge before
he enters the water.

This is the Greenway’s Swinging Bridge, the main access to the other side of the Spillway.

The view of the Swinging Bridge from the top of the stairs. Normally the plant growth is not high enough to intertwine with siding along the Swinging Bridge.

Coleman begins
splashing back and forth
with his feet.

As you look at the pictures below you’ll be able to see and understand the extreme drought we are experiencing. The extremely low water levels caused by insufficient rainfall is disappointing to see. Ordinarily the water would rise above Coleman’s knees and you would not be seeing all the dirt, red clay, and mud which you can observe here.

Even though the water levels were extremely low it did not prevent Coleman from having a Splashing Good Time running back and forth, to and fro, as well as up and down the length of the Spillway.

2025 CosPhoChal: 28 July — Up, down, and sideways

Dale is challenging us this week because to post fotos that fit the theme of Up, down and sideways. My first three fit the squares aww c theme, but were not taken at the same time or location.

Then I looked at Dale’s selections again and realized they were all shot at the same location, so I decided to choose an additional set of trios.

Coleman’s Special Day at the Greenway

Sixth Birthday Adventure

Coleman’s special day adventures began with a short hike through the🌲trees 🌲…

Next up on his special day adventures were a little bit of splash Funtime in the Greenway’s Spillway … but first he needed to cross the swinging bridge

Now to see his Splashtime Funtime

The water level of the Greenway’s Spillway was really super low, however, that did not prevent Coleman from cooling off and having a Splashing good time on his Special Day Adventure.

Happy Sixth (6th) Birthday Coleman!

2024 LAPC #293: Water Flowing Through the Spillway

We had a very beautiful sunny weekend. It was warm and windy day. We decided it was a lovely day for hiking at Anne Springs Close Greenway. Due to the massive abundance of vehicles parking at the Lake Haigler Entrance for the Artisan Market I chose to park at the Dairy Barn Entrance. There was another reason for parking at this entrance as well; they charged extra at the other entrance because of the Artisan Market. Who wants to pay extra? I certainly didn’t, not in addition to my membership for the Greenway.

The Dairy Barn Entrance has a few different trails that can be accessed with various sites and scenery to observe. We hiked down the Blue Star Trail which leads down to the Greenway’s Spillway passing horses and the Faires/Coltharp Historic Cabin along the way.

Coleman loves to stop and watch the horses. Moving along, to crossover the Spillway we had to walk across the Swinging Bridge. We stopped on both sides of the Spillway to observe the water flowing down, around, and under the Swinging Bridge.

2023 CWWC Part 2: Any which way with people in the Greenway

I decided to go ahead and do a part two to my CWWC – Any Which Way with People Challenge post. These photos are all taken at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The hikers you see pictured here are all members of the Anne Springs Close Greenway Hiking Club. Coleman and I participate in hikes with the hiking club whenever feasible. When it is not possible to join the hiking club for a hike Coleman and I go to the Greenway or various other hiking trails to hike. (Just an FYI, Coleman has been hiking the Greenway trails since he was approximately one and a half years old (1 1/2).

NPC #13: Butterflies

All of the butterfly 🦋 photos I’ve captured so far were all taken within the grounds of Anne Springs Close Greenway. First photos are of Eastern Tiger Swallowtails shot with an iPhone 13 Pro.

Male tiger swallowtails

Male tiger swallowtails are bright yellow with black tiger stripes on the tops of their wings. You can sometimes find groups of male swallowtail butterflies gathered on the ground around mud puddles or other damp spots. This is a behavior called puddling. The butterflies are sucking minerals and other substances out of the damp ground. (This behavior can be seen quite often at the spillway at Anne Springs Close Greenway.)

Other butterflies found within Anne Springs Close Greenway:

Asterocampa celtis,
the hackberry emperor,
is a North American butterfly
that belongs to the
brushfooted butterfly family,
Nymphalidae.
It gets its name from
the hackberry tree.
