The Goethe House is famous as the birthplace and childhood home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He is one of Germany’s most famous writers. His most famous masterpiece literary work was Faust, a tragic play written in rhyme verse and split into two-part parts; it is about a brilliant scholar who makes a pact with the devil.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in this house in 1749 and continued to live there for the first twenty-six (26) years of his life. The Goethe House has had an interesting journey through history. The original house was largely destroyed during World War II. It was meticulously rebuilt between 1947and 1951. The rebuilding was based on the original plans, drawings, and furnishings that had been carefully preserved.

Today, The Goethe House is a museum offering a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century life and Goethe’s early years. It is complete with period furniture, his writing desk , and other personal belongings. The reconstruction ensures visitors will be able to experience the authentic atmosphere of Goethe’s childhood home.
