2025 Spring Festival #10 —

Limonium perezii &

Calandrinia ciliata

Welcome to my Week #10 Floral contribution to Dawn’s Spring Festival 2025.

Beautiful Sea Lavender and Red Maids of are a Spring delight along the La Jolla Shores for visitors and locals to enjoy and admire. [In my youth I used to spend a tremendous amount of time along the sands and in the water at La Jolla Shores. At that time I didn’t pay no mind to the floral landscape, but I greatly appreciate its beauty nowadays.]

Limonium perezii
aka Perez’s sea lavender
and seafoam statice

Sea lavender blooms intermittently for months and nearly year round in frost-free coastal climates. Their dry, papery petals retain the colour well, making them an excellent choice for dried arrangements. They are also ideal for seaside gardens or decorative containers.

& Red Maids

Sea Lavender (Limonium perezii) is primarily pollinated by bees, butterflies, and other flying insects. These insects are attracted to the beautiful clusters of small, fragrant flowers that grow on the plant.

Red Maids
Aka Calandrinia ciliata

Red Maids might be considered weeds in some places, however, in the majority of areas they are considered wildflowers.  Red Maids sure have beautiful deep pink flowers that open mostly in the afternoon.

The leaves are edible and cattle love them, but the black oil-rich seeds are what made the plant a substantial part of Southern California Indian diets. The leaves, especially the young leaves and young shoots, may be eaten fresh, although due to their content of oxalic acid, should be eaten sparingly.

The wildlife-friendly plant grows up to about 8″ tall and makes a good ornamental in the garden that is easily plantable by seed.

2025 Spring Festival #9 —

Zantedeschia

Calla Lilies

Welcome to my Week #9 Floral contribution to Dawn’s Spring Festival. This week I am displaying Calla Lilies at various stages from my neighbours garden. Coleman stops by their garden every day on the way to and from the school bus to see which flowers have blossomed from one day to the next.

Zantedeschia, (Calla Lilies) is the sole genus in the tribe Zantedeschieae in a 1997 classification of the Araceae. There are currently eight (8) recognized species. Portrayed here are the White, Yellow, and Pink Calla Lilies.

They are herbaceous, bulbous perennials with long, arrow-shaped leaves; some species have leaves with beautiful, window-like translucent spots.  The uniquely shaped flower heads, consisting of small flowers in a spadix surrounded by a spathe, make great cut flowers.  The spathe is usually white or green, but cultivars exist with yellow, pink, red, and purple hues.  They bloom from late spring to early summer.

Calla Lilies can be grown in pots or in the ground. These images are of Calla Lilies grown in a small garden. ‘Calla lily’ is a member of the Arum family and is poisonous if eaten.

Calla lilies generally prefer full sun to partial shade, with full sun being ideal for cooler regions and partial shade being more suitable for warmer areas. They are perennial plants which may grow back every year and continue to produce beautiful blooms under the right conditions.

Calla Lilies may multiply spreading through their underground rhizomes, which develop additional growth buds and can be divided to create new plants. These particular Calla Lilies have been divided and multiplied continuously over time.

2025 Festival of Spring Flowers

Water Lilies

Spring is the time when Water Lilies bloom, specifically between Early to mid-May to mid-June in our southern region of the United States. People in tend to get excited the closer it gets to blooming season. The blossoms of the water lilies are strikingly impressive especially in beauty or excellence when in full bloom.

Spring Festival 2025: Along the South Fork Catawba River

Spring Flowers are springing up up and down the river and riverbanks. Coleman and I took a walk on Friday to Riverside Park and Greenway, I was amazed at all the beautiful flowers sprouting into bloom.

Here are some of the flowers we came across that are starting to blossom. There are signs that indicate other flowers will blossom in the next week or so.

The Green Arrow Arum should begin blooming in the next two-three weeks, about the same timeframe as the Spider Lilies.

2025 Monochrome Madness (MM) #32: Springtime in the Carolinas

Host this week for Monochrome Madness is Dawn from The Day After. She has chosen a theme of Everything Spring.

Springtime in the Carolinas entails anything and everything from Spring sports like T-Ball for Coleman, to Kayaking through the Catawba River, to simply rolling in the grass at an outdoor concert, to the beauty of Spring flowers. And who can’t forget about the Spring festivities surrounding the Easter Egg Scramble. Let us not forget what this Holiday Season is all about. It is not about the Easter eggs hunts, even though the children enjoy them, it’s about the Crucifixion of Jesus and his Resurrection. We celebrate that “He is Risen!”.

“Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.”
