#Leaf Peeping in Goat Island Greenway

Terri, host of Sunday Stills has challenged us to show our #Leaf colours. In our area are #Leaves have slowing been displaying their Autumnal colour schemes. Sunday we had a beautiful Sun Shiny day with a high in the low 70’s°, unlike the past couple of days with highs only in the upper 40’s° and freeze warnings.

With a rare warm sunny day Coleman and I meandered down to Goat Island Park and Greenway for a hike along the River Link Greenway to check out the amazingly gorgeous Autumn colours vibrantly painted throughout the trail.

Here are a selection of images from our hike #Leaf Peeping through the Greenway …

Hope y’all enjoy the video clip of our #Leaf Peeping through the Greenway.

2025 OWS: Looking Up (From Underneath)

Daucus carota

Also Known as Bee’s Nest-Plant; Bird’s-Nest; Devil’s Plague; Queen Anne’s Lace; and Wild Carrot

Queen Anne’s Lace is a summer biennial wildflower from the Apiaceae (carrot) family. In some states it is considered invasive. It has naturalized in many states and can be found in sun to partial shade along roadsides, old fields, and waste places. In our area of North Carolina Queen Anne’s Lace can be found along trails, in wooded areas, and near the Catawba River.

The 2 to 4 foot tall umbels of white flowers appear in its second year of growth from mid-summer to mid-fall and have a lacy look. The basal rosette consists of 5-inch long arching leaves with a few leaves occurring alternately up the main stem.

Instead of looking straight at these flowers I chose to shot them looking up at them from underneath for a unique perspective.

Water reflections are the most common reflections we see on our adventures. Perhaps, due to being close to the Catawba River or possibly within a short drive of any number of lakes. It doesn’t really matter, I love gazing over the water no matter where we are to see the reflections of the surrounding landscape reflecting over the water.

2025 Spring Festival #9 —

Zantedeschia

Calla Lilies

Welcome to my Week #9 Floral contribution to Dawn’s Spring Festival. This week I am displaying Calla Lilies at various stages from my neighbours garden. Coleman stops by their garden every day on the way to and from the school bus to see which flowers have blossomed from one day to the next.

Zantedeschia, (Calla Lilies) is the sole genus in the tribe Zantedeschieae in a 1997 classification of the Araceae. There are currently eight (8) recognized species. Portrayed here are the White, Yellow, and Pink Calla Lilies.

They are herbaceous, bulbous perennials with long, arrow-shaped leaves; some species have leaves with beautiful, window-like translucent spots.  The uniquely shaped flower heads, consisting of small flowers in a spadix surrounded by a spathe, make great cut flowers.  The spathe is usually white or green, but cultivars exist with yellow, pink, red, and purple hues.  They bloom from late spring to early summer.

Calla Lilies can be grown in pots or in the ground. These images are of Calla Lilies grown in a small garden. ‘Calla lily’ is a member of the Arum family and is poisonous if eaten.

Calla lilies generally prefer full sun to partial shade, with full sun being ideal for cooler regions and partial shade being more suitable for warmer areas. They are perennial plants which may grow back every year and continue to produce beautiful blooms under the right conditions.

Calla Lilies may multiply spreading through their underground rhizomes, which develop additional growth buds and can be divided to create new plants. These particular Calla Lilies have been divided and multiplied continuously over time.

2025 CosPhoChal: Up, Down and Sideways … This Way and That Way

“I LOOKED UP THE WAY I WAS GOING AND BACK THE WAY I COME AND SINCE I WASN’T SATISFIED I STEPPED OFF AND [FOUND] ME A NEW PATH.”

MAYA ANGELOU

Whenever one goes hiking in the woods it is wise to be mindful of your surroundings. Pay close attention to your environment using all of your senses in order to identify potential hazards and navigate safely.

Thus look up to be aware of any changes in the weather; look from side to side observing for wildlife, uneven terrain, and potential hazards like deep drops or slippery rocks. Look downward and backward always being aware of your direction and the surrounding landscape, and use a map and compass if available.

Pay attention to the feel of the ground under your feet and the temperature to make certain you are staying on solid footing and avoiding cold and damp areas.

Up
Down
Sideways

Coleman and I go hiking/walking practically every week, sometimes several times during a week. Looking up occasionally ensures the weather is still good, no storms or cold temperatures encompassing. We always look around us being on the lookout for any wildlife (lizards, snakes, birds, etc.). Looking down the path to make sure no tree limbs, rocks, or other obstacles are on the trails to ensure our safety. We don’t want any preventable accidents like scrapped knees, arms or injuries to occur if at all possible.

“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing views. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.”

– Edward Abbey

Up
Down

Beauty is all around us, to see it all one must look up, down, sideways, and all around you or you might miss out on something truly special and beautiful.

Spring Festival 2025: Along the South Fork Catawba River

Spring Flowers are springing up up and down the river and riverbanks. Coleman and I took a walk on Friday to Riverside Park and Greenway, I was amazed at all the beautiful flowers sprouting into bloom.

Here are some of the flowers we came across that are starting to blossom. There are signs that indicate other flowers will blossom in the next week or so.

The Green Arrow Arum should begin blooming in the next two-three weeks, about the same timeframe as the Spider Lilies.

Canada Geese in Flight, On Land, & in Water

Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) are very common sight here in the Carolinas. With the warmer temperatures and spring weather approaching, the Canada Geese are flocking to the lakes and rivers.

The Canada Goose is a large species of goose with a black head and neck, white cheeks, white under its chin, and a brown body. They are herbivorous and normally migratory in nature. They are often found on or close proximity to fresh water. They are also common in brackish marshes, estuaries, and lagoons. In our area they are oftentimes on and near the Catawba River or its tributaries, such as the South Fork (Catawba) River.

This week I am linking to Bird of the Week; Judy’s Numbers Game #61-182 and Carol’s Thursday Trios and XingfuMama’s Whatsoever Is Lovely.

It was a tremendous pleasure to watch the Canada Geese sunning on the river’s shoreline, diving into the water, taking flight and landing in the water.
