2023 Monday Windows: NEW BRAUNFELS RAILROAD MUSEUM

New Braunfels Railroad Museum

The New Braunfels Railroad Museum resides within the 1907 International and Great Northern Depot. In October of 1986, the New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modelers Society was granted a long-term lease of the closed depot. At that point the restoration and museum efforts were begun. It interior was painted and the exterior was repainted to match one of the previous remodels of the depot. Brick pavers and new sidewalks were added to aid in the preservation of the museum artifacts and displays. Then again in 2007 the members undertook a compete make-over of the display area. This included new custom-made display cases, track lighting, and additional displays of items that had previously needed to be stored. Displays include a rare velocipede from the late 1800’s; several restored baggage carts, a complete telegraphy system and its history; a history of “standard time”; area specific photos; lanterns, timetables, passes, uniforms, and various other “tools” required of the railroad employee to sufficiently get his job done.

I visited the New Braunfels Railroad back in February of 2020 when I made a took a bus trip to Texas to visit relatives. When they had appointments in the New Braunfels area I would tag along and walk the streets sightseeing to see interesting sights in the area. I found the museum to be fascinating and enjoyed my self-guided walking tour.

Window Replacement

This month our apartment complex decided to replace all the windows in all of the apartments in the complex. [I saw no problem with the old ones, except they were painted shut so we couldn’t open them.] Today, (Friday, 2023 April 21), is our day for the new replacement windows to be installed. My grandson & the dog do not like the loud noise & the confusion.

This whole process of replacing all the windows in our three-bedroom townhome rook approximately 3 1/2 hours. Two men at a time worked on each window. First, chiseling and hammering all around the old wooden windows to loosen them up in order for them to be able to be taken out. One crew of two men worked on the downstairs windows, while a different pair worked on the upstairs windows. The old wooden windows were replaced with new vinyl windows. At this point, I am not sure if they will be better energy efficient wise or not. One good thing about the new windows is the ability to open them if we so desire. The old windows were painted shut and we were not able to open them. It will be good to have a breeze coming through the windows instead of using air conditioning so much. Especially during the upcoming summer months. The new windows can also be tiled inward for easier access to cleaning.

Our dog had to be shut up in a cage during this whole process which he definitely did not like. Whenever the workers were making the loud noises (which went on throughout the whole process) he would bark. He would bark even more so when they were working on the windows out back where he was located. I felt for him, but there was nothing I could do while the workmen were working. I couldn’t let him out of the cage. He did have plenty of food and water and area of shade.

As stated earlier, my grandson, Coleman, didn’t care for the loud noises either. He hated it so much he would cover his ears with his little hands.

Gotta love his facial and eye expressions. I wish I could have blocked put the loud noise as well. I know we were all ecstatic with joy when they were all done replacing our windows and we could relax and enjoy some much-deserved peace and quiet.

Monday Windows/Thursday Doors – Dressed for the Season

This week I am combining my Monday Windows with Thursday Doors. These were captured last week when my grandson, Coleman and I went walking along the Baxter Village Trailhead and part of the Baxter Village Neighborhood. Some of the doors were decorated for Autumn and others were decorated for Christmas already.

Posted as part of Monday Windows, Thursday Doors, and Walking Squares.

God bless. Thank you for visiting. Hope y’all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Remember, I appreciate y’all.

Our hike/walk today landed us in Baxter Village, a section in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Baxter Village has a trailhead across from the Fort Mill Library which is a part of the Carolina Thread Trail. The Carolina Thread Trail has trails throughout the Carolinas for everyone to enjoy the outdoors and get close to nature. This was our first time visiting this trail and we will probably visit it again. We, my grandson and I, only hiked a fraction of the trail today. The length of the trails run from Baxter Village down to the Catawba River. We hiked from the trailhead in Baxter Village to Allison Creek Park not wanting to overdue being out in the cold chilly weather.
