This Southern Cross of Honor is placed on my paternal 2X Great Grandfather’s grave. My 2X Great Grandfather John Thomas Waters ( Gravemarker reads THO’S WATERS) served honourably during the Civil War as a soldier of the Lucas Guards, a South Carolina unit of the Confederate Army.
[This is a part of my ancestral history and is not up for discussion. Like most soldiers regardless of who what unit or side of any war they served in, he and his comrades believed in what they were fighting for during their time period in history.]

Hither and Thither and Yon to a land used once long ago. From San Francisco to Alcatraz,Hither and Thither and Yon we traveled on and on.
The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary or United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island, off the coast of San Francisco, California, USA, which operated from 1934 to 1963.
Hither and Thither and Yon we venture on and on. We wander to this land and that land stopping to see what’s near and far. From Northern California to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Hither and Thither and Yon we wondered how the Hopi Native Americans lived and how long it took them to build the Hopi House.
Hither and Thither and Yon the architectural design built in 1904 by local Hopi artisans. It was designed to resemble a traditional Hopi pueblo.
Hopi House is located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, within Grand Canyon National Park in the U.S. state of Arizona.
Hither and Thither and Yon we journey on and on for a long adventure to the Carolinas in the southeastern portion of the United States. Over hills and mountains and through the wide plains and plateaus of Texas onward and upwards to the Carolinas we travel on and on.
Hither and Thither and Yon we roam the vast acreage of Anne Springs Close Greenway and are amazed by the moving and reconstructing of the Graham Cabin.
Graham Cabin located in the grounds of Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill, South Carolina.The cabin is more than two hundred (200) years old. According to an early 1800’s census the Reverend Billy Graham’s grandfather, Archibald Graham, born in this cabin and lived there for a time.

Hither and Thither and Yon we travel south from the Graham Cabin to see the Mebane Grammer School in the town where my father grew up. Hither and Thither and Yon I wonder why I travel on and on seeking whatever’s in the vast beyond.
Mebane Grammer School (Original Great Falls Grammar School) was built in 1924 in Great Falls, South Carolina. It was named for the Mebane family who were officers with Republic Mills. [The company that ran the mills in Great Falls. My paternal grandfather worked in the Republic ‘s #3 mill]. The school burned down in 1976.
Hither and Thither and Yon maybe it’s time to be close to family once again. Hither and Thither and Yon to the Old Watson Homestead we travel on and on. Hither and Thither and Yon It’s time to relax and feel at home on the Old Homestead with family close by.
Jeramiah (Jerry) Watson Family Home place. This is the homestead place of my maternal Great Grandparents (my mother’s father’s parents) near Deep Gap, North Carolina. It was a place known for the family to gather together and share good times and fellowship with one another.

Unfortunately my dad at my current age was no longer among the living. He passed on to the next life in Heaven at the age of sixty-seven (67) and seven (7) months. If he’d lived longer he would be taking photos and traveling with my mom to places around the United States of America.
My mom would have been a widow of two and one-half (2 1/2) years. She would have been dealing with grief and going through my dad’s belongings and deciding what to keep, what to sell, and what to give away. She would have been working as a secretary for a church office and teaching a Sunday school class. She would have also taken her dream trip to Alaska via a cruise ship and touring various places in Alaska. She would have continued to read her daily devotions and read her romance fiction novels.

I’m learning to use the Fusion camera’s Monochrome features in my new iPhone 16 Pro Max. While Coleman was playing out back on one of our rare warm winter days, I looked up into the sky and saw a small group of black birds flying through the air. I pointed my iPhone towards the sky in hopes of capturing shots of the birds as they flew overhead of us. Cease the Moments. Enjoy the World around you. Capture the Memories each day.
These were taken back in February of 2023 when Coleman and I convinced my daughter and granddaughter to Tag-along on one of our hiking adventures. For this hike, we chose to visit the Baxter Village Trail which begins near the Library in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Hiking along on the trail we encounter plenty of Brown and a bit of Black as well as some other colours.
The Baxter Village Trail is a part of the Carolina Thread Trail network of trails within North and South Carolina. It is also a part of a 9-mile network of trails within the Baxter Village Community. This particular trail is a 3.3-mile segment of the Thread Trail trail is moderately hilly and features several streams along its length.

The trail consisted of natural surfaces, boardwalks, and some pavement. The rating for the trail is moderate, but for Coleman and I it was rather easy. As you can see we wound through a forest of trees and through tunnel and for my grandchildren over the tunnel as well.

Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.
There is something on my “to-do list” that has been a dream of mine since 2019 or maybe even earlier. The one thing that if ever possible ( which so far hasn’t been) would be to travel across the United States tent camping in State and National Parks in each of the forty-eight contiguous U.S. states.

As I imagined traveling through the various contiguous states I hoped I would be able to visit relatives in some of those states, like Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Texas, Nevada, and California to name a few. I have wanted to visit family gravesites for my ancestors and pay my respects even to those I have never actually met in person, but only know about via family connections and ancestral research.

I would have the time now except for the fact that my daughter relies on me to watch and care for my grandson while she works. The one thing I’m not sure about is the transportation ( I currently do not have my own vehicle). I have considered traveling by train across America getting on and off at specific destinations (or as close as I could possibly get). This may or may not occur, but it is still on my “to-do list” of things I would like to see happen.
As Coleman and I were walking around Downtown Cramerton on the way back from Goat Island we walked through the backside of the businesses that run along Center Street. What we noticed were the Mural that were painted on the businesses back walls covering a good portion of the wall including the doors. The Mural pictured in the photos on the left are from the Skillet Southern Bistro’s back patio and outside dining area with plenty of room to enjoy the evening.

The Mural pictured on the right are from the outside back wall of Confluence South Fork.Confluence is a place to gather for young and old alike. It is run by the Catawba Riverkeepers. It offers beer for adults, sells artwork created by a local artist and souvenirs. It holds concerts for all to enjoy some specifically designed for children. It offers the ability for visitors to rent disc golf discs, cornhole bags, and ping pong paddles to ball at Goat Island Park and Greenway located across the road from its location.

Yes, I collected stamps with my dad growing up, putting them in stamp covers and into our stamp albums side by side. I once collected bird figurines, and later bears. You might say I collected books because after I read them I tend to keep them and they keep piling up in boxes and boxes and boxes.
What is the silliest thing you’ve ever bought? I’m not sure if I’ve bought anything silly or not. I tend to buy practical things, things that have a purpose and can last for a long long time hopefully.
When it comes to jewellery, do you prefer gold, silver, or gem stones? My preference to jewelry has changed over the years. When I was younger I preferred yellow gold, then silver or white gold. Nowadays I do not wear much in the way of jewelry.
Do you know what your birthstone is? My birthstone is Emerald. My wedding ring had emeralds that surrounded my diamond.

I have recently upgraded my smartphone from the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max to the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. It has features which the iPhone 14 Pro Max did not have.
The Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max has in addition to the main camera, ultra-wide camera, and the telephoto camera it also has a Fusion camera. The Fusion camera has ten (10) different modes to choose from ranging from standard to Dramatic to Mute or Stark Black and White with several different options in between. In the Fusion Square you can slide between lighter or darker and control the amount of light desired for an image.
This Fusion Camera feature is all new and different to me. I have only had my Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max since last Monday and have not figured out all its new “bells and whistles” (new upgraded features). Today it was in the high 70’s here, warm enough to allow Coleman to play outside. Instead of going on a hike like we’d normally do, I decided to let him try out his T-ball set up. He will be playing T-Ball through our local Recreational Center and figured it wouldn’t hurt to let him try to practice hitting a ball.
The first eight (8) of these photos were taken using the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Mac’s Fusion camera with the Mute Black and White setting. The last seven (7) were taken using its Stark Black and White settings.
Off and on I will choose to edit a photo into one on the black and white/monochrome features which I can easily access. I have selected four different images for comparisons for this challenge.

Thirdly, is a comparison of the coast of Costa Maya, Mexico which was taken from a cruise ship in 2020.
The U.S. Air Flight 1016 Memorial honors the people who died on board the flight from Columbia, S.C. to Charlotte on July 2, 1994. The Memorial includes a plaque in memory of those who died or were injured and those who helped rescue efforts. The Memorial is located in a section of the CLT (Charlotte Douglas International) Airport Overlook in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The U.S. Air Flight 1016 crashed in Charlotte 30 1/2 years ago. During that horrific crash in 1994 thirty-seven (37) of the fifty-seven (57) people on board died. The people in Charlotte and the surrounding areas have not forgotten.
On July 2, 1994, the flight encountered heavy thunderstorms and microburst-induced windshear while attempting to land, and crashed into heavy trees and a private residence near the airport. The crash and ensuing Fire caused 37 fatalities and seriously injured 20 people.
The New CLT Airport Overlook Memorial was designed to represent Morse Code for CAE (Columbia) and CLT, the origin and destination airports for the flight. It includes a plaque in memory of those who died or were injured and those who helped rescue efforts.
This past Tuesday Coleman, my daughter Trisha, and I paid a visit to the CLT Airport Overlook to allow Coleman to play in the Overlook’s new playground. While there we also visited the U.S. Air Flight 1016 Memorial. The reverse side of the pillar about U.S. Air Flight 1016 lists the names of the thirty-seven (37) people who died in the crash.

U. S. National Whitewater Center
The U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina has the largest the world’s largest manmade whitewater river and has outdoor activities all year long. Besides the Whitewater River area, the Center also has 1,300 acres of protected woodlands along the Catawba River. No matter your preference, the Whitewater Center offers a wide range of recreational opportunities to intrigue your interest for a fantabulous experience in the great outdoors.
I have not done many water sports since my younger more limber and flexible days of my youth. What does perk my interests in visiting the U.S. National Whitewater Center are the forty (40) miles of trails designed for mountain biking and trail racing. You don’t have to ride a mountain bike or race on the trails to enjoy them. The 40+ miles of trails are a great opportunity for hikers as well. The trails are shared by hikers, runners, and bikers at all times.
The trails are natural surface and wind across the 1,300 acre woods of the Center. The trails run along the Catawba River and through hardwood and pine forests. The use of the trails are free not requiring an access pass, however, the Whitewater Center does charge $12 for a day parking pass and $40 for an annual parking pass.

I think Coleman and I would enjoy hikers some of the various trails at the WhitewaterCenter given the opportunity for warmer weather, costs and transportation to and from the Center.

The F-4 Phantom II was built by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation ( McDonnell Aircraft Corporation). It was a supersonic, all-weather, twin-engine, two seat fighter-bomber and interceptor jet. It was originally designed for the U.S. Navy in 1953.
The F-4 Phantom II was the most produced American fighter jet. It had become a symbol of the Cold War. It was a formidable aircraft which played a pivotal role in military aviation from the 1960s into the 1990s.
The F-4 was designed around an all-missile armament system with the expectation that air combat would take place at a distance. Its combination of speed, range, and versatility made it a key player in air combat and ground support, leaving a lasting legacy in military history.
The F-4 Phantom II was retired from service in the United States Navy in the 1980’s. The F-4 Phantom II was also retired from the Royal Air Force in 1992. The last active duty F-4 Phantom II was launched from an aircraft in 1986. The last carrier landing of an F-4 Phantom II was in 1986. The last F-4 Phantom target drones were retired in 2004.

On Tuesday my daughter had a day off of work and decided to give Coleman a surprise. After he got off the school bus in the afternoon, she drove us to the Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) Airport Overlook.
In 2024 the CLT Airport Overlook underwent a major overhaul. This overhaul project cost a whopping $8 million. This is the fifth overlook for the Charlotte Douglas International Airport since 1937.
This New CLT Airport Overlook has two (2) age-specific playgrounds with shaded areas. Of course, being at the airport, the playgrounds have an airport theme including runway, a cargo transport vehicle, and a mini air traffic control tower.
The CLT Overlook also has a covered space with ten (10) covered picnic tables plus uncovered picnic tables and benches with LED lighting for pedestrian and parking areas. There are a couple of other features which I will discuss in an upcoming future post.

Today (yes, I know I’m behind in getting this posted) is World Cancer Day. Cancer has affected millions of people worldwide. It is estimated that about Twenty (20) million new cancer cases occur and close to 9.7 million cancer related deaths each year. Even though the number of Cancer related cases and death are outrageous, that is not my main focus for discussing World Cancer Day.
Like it or not the majority of us have been affected by Cancer. Some suffering or are currently experiencing Cancer, while others have friends and/or relatives battling cancer’s effects and treatment side effects.
My mom, in January 2019, laying in a hospital bed afflicted by the debilitating effects of Cancer with my niece holding her hand.
I’ve known and currently know way too many family and friends who have suffered in one manner or another with the debilitating and devastating effects of the horrendous numbers of Cancer diseases which affect too many people to even consider imagining. It is mind boggling.
My dad died from Cancer on December 31, 1996. He had prostate cancer, cancer in his lymph nodes, kidney cancer, and lastly bone cancer. He suffered for several years and through the prescribed treatments, surgeries, and medications and yet cancer after cancer continuously infected his body. He never let himself get defeated. He never wavered in his faith in the Lord.
My mom died on January 18, 2019 from Cancer. She too suffered through various types of Cancers, including the cancer related surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. After having taken care of my dad and watch him suffer through the endless treatments and debilitating side effects; she chose not to undergo any more treatments when she was diagnosed with cancer, once again, in 2018. Through it all my mom learned to Trust in God. She stated that Trust meant to

This meaning of Trust could be applied regardless of our circumstances. God is faithful to Not allow us to go through anything He won’t be right there beside us comforting us, strengthening us, and guiding us every single day of our lives.
My former spouse died of Cancer on June 15, 2018, his younger brother died of cancer this past year.
I have numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as too many friends to count who have suffered from Cancer, some still managing through the effects of Cancer and others who are no longer with us in body, but will always be with us in spirit.
World Cancer Day’s theme for 2025-2027 is “United by Unique.” It places people at the centre of care and explores new ways of making a difference. This theme highlights the importance of personalized care and treatments to cater to each individual’s unique needs.

You and I may not be personally suffering with Cancer, but we can be there for someone we know who might (or is currently) experiencing fighting Cancer. How can we be there for someone? What can we do?
There actually are many different ways that we (you and I) can offer and/or provide help to someone with Cancer. We can provide practical support, offer emotional support, and by simply being a good listener.
Practical support includes running errands, providing a meal, assisting with household chores, caring for children or whatever means would best benefit the person you choose to support.
Emotional support includes being a good listener, no judgements and being aware of their thoughts and feelings. Letting a person know you’re willing to listen if and when they are ready to talk. Sometimes a hug will mean a great deal to someone in need. Let people know you care, whether telling them face to face or sending them a card or message. And no matter what a person situation or circumstance might be, always remember to Pray for them.
Let’s not forget that not just the afflicted need our support, but also the families and caregivers also. Pray for all those affected by Cancer; the patient, their families, their caregivers, and their doctors. Prayers are a tremendous gift one can offer to someone in need, to someone fighting this Cancer battle on a daily basis.

Here are this week’s questions:
What can you remember about your last day at school/college? My last day of school/college was a long long time ago. It was a day to stand, sit, and wait for the graduation ceremony to end. My High School graduation was held in the Starlight Bowl Balboa Park’s Amphitheater. The highlight of the ceremony some might not consider a highlight, but instead an embarrassment. There were a couple of streakers who ran across the stage.
Were you close enough to walk to school or did you need transport? For my elementary school, I walked a 0.5 miles extremely long blocks to and from school every day which took a minimum of ten (10) minutes depending on traffic lights. For my Junior High School, I walked approximately 14-15 minutes for O.6 miles each way. I walked past the shopping center and a small strip mall and a long block of houses before entering the school grounds. Now for my High School, I did not live close enough to walk. My high school was near my dad’s work, so he drove me to school and dropped me off on the side street. At the end of the school day, I rode the city bus to my neighbourhood and walked the rest of the way home.
Did you have a favourite teacher? I’m not sure that I remember many of my teachers names. My eighth grade history teacher would give me extra credit to improve my grade. I didn’t care much for history back then, but I did enjoy doing research. This teacher allowed me to research a person or historical topic and write a report on the subject. I had a teacher in high school that allowed a few students a pass from being in the classroom. The only condition was you had to attend a Kiwanis luncheon downtown (yes, we got to eat at the luncheon), listen to a guest speaker and then talk about what the speaker spoke about at the next class session with a written report to turn in to him.
Would you like to go back to school? At this present stage of my life I have no desire to go back to school, however, that doesn’t prevent me from reading, researching, writing, or whatsoever is appropriate to keep myself learning new ideas and experiencing new things and having adventures learning in nature with my grandson.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge prompt for this week is Black and White. Looking through this past week’s photos from Coleman and my visit to Goat Island Park and Greenway, I found few that I think would work for this challenge.

Coleman and I love to go hiking and whenever I am Willing to go hiking, he is always Willing to put on his hiking boots rearing to go on a hiking adventure. No matter when or where we might venture on our adventures I am usually almost always Willing to bring my Canon along to take photographs of the amazingly beautiful nature surrounding whatever hiking trail we choose to tackle for the day.
Most often than not Coleman and I close to hike in a local Greenway, Nature Preserve, or a State Park. Coleman is always excited and rearing to go out for a hike. He distastes being cooped up indoors. The majority of Greenways or State Parks are filled with Green trees, lawns, and vegetation. It’s like walking through a lush Green forest snapping photographs one by one with my Camera. I often take photographs with my iPhone as well as my Canon.
For this post I am combining several challenges into one post. I Willing chosen to select Photographs with plenty of Green using Green and Hiking as my theme for Judy’s Numbers Game.

The Sky is a wondrous example of how as the weather changes quickly, so can the events in our lives. Be thankful for the good and the bad and remember God is in Control. Just as we need the rain and look forward to sunny days; our lives may seem dreary but blessings abound amongst us. Be thankful for the Rain as well as the Sunshine. Both are needed even if we prefer the good ole sunshiny days of life.
