Around Lake Haigler
It is almost guaranteed that while Coleman and I are out hiking along a trail, he’ll decide to sit and rest a second or two before moving on. He can choose to just plop on the ground or hop up on one of the benches scattered along the trail. On this day we chose to hike around Lake Haigler at the Greenway.

Yesterday was a loving day to spend hiking in the Greenway. Unlike the day before when it rained all day and all night. The trails were a bit muddy, however, the views were beautiful with gorgeous skylines and amazing reflection.

These challenges are so fitting with our recent activity of hiking at the Greenway. We had a lovely hike and enjoyed watching the Canada Geese fly in, taking a dip and flying back out of the water. It was fun and amusing to watch.

What is your favorite place to go in your city?
The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium is our favorite place to go to in our city, however, the most favorite place we love to go, and hike is in a town called Fort Mill. Fort Mill has many interesting places to visit where you can hike, or just enjoy the scenery.
The place we like to go and hike the most is called Anne Springs Close Greenway. The Greenway has five (5) different points of entrance and one can hike any one of the many trails on the 2,100 acres of nature preserve. The trails cover thirty-six (36) miles of hiking pleasure for hikers, runners, walkers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders to enjoy. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Whenever we are able to visit the Greenway, we like to enter at a different entrance point every time. Visiting different entrances gives us access to the many different trails and beautiful scenery accessible at the various locations. The most popular entrance is the Lake Haigler Entrance and is used by guests frequently. The entrances are:
I encourage y’all if you are ever in the area to stop by and visit the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Beautiful Nature Preserve, Wildflower Garden, and many amazing sights to see and photograph. My grandson, Coleman, and I love to visit the Greenway any and every opportunity we receive. I highly recommend visiting.

Our first stop here was actually our last time of Coleman’s Friday Adventures. The Gastonia Municipal Airport showing the runway and some airplanes.
Next up was our first stop of the day; the Lake Haigler Entrance to the Anne Springs Close Greenway for a hike around the lake. It is always a great day when we can spend time in nature at the Greenway. There are always amazingly beautiful views and is filled with tremendous fun.

Coleman and I hiked at Anne Springs Close Greenway on Friday. When we were there, we noticed a tremendous amount of construction work going on. They are making improvements to the Farm area, adding a Childrens Farm area, and adding additional animals to the Farm. Some of these improvements include adding buildings, bathrooms, and educational shelter areas with a wooden walkway to be able to observe the farm animals more effectively. Given the construction work is ongoing and is not estimated to be completed until approximately April 2024, the windows for these buildings are still under construction.
The new improvements will really enhance the Farm and Children’s Farm areas in the Greenway. I know my grandson; Coleman is super excited to be able to pet the animals and be able to better watch and pet them up close and personal. If you’re ever in the area I would encourage you to drop by the Greenway for a visit.

While hiking at the Anne Springs Close Greenway, we stopped by to visit with the horses. I took plenty of photos during our hike, most of the horses we’re approachable and really do not mind the many visitors to the Greenway looking at them or petting them. Then sometimes you see a horse that really wants to get a Close-Up view of you or let you get an extremely Close-Up view of him.

I was able to visit the New Braunfels Railroad Museum back in January in 2020 when I had the opportunity to visit a relative prior to taking a cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas.
The 100-foot long turntable bridge on the ring rail — the outer circular rail. The roundhouse and turntable were apart of the Southern Railway Spencer’s Shops Complex. They are part of the North Carolina Transportation Museum.
The Roundhouse is the largest one of its kind remaining in the U.S. It was built in 1924 and served as a repair shop for locomotives and rail cars. In the old days, a turntable operator was on duty to spin the table to line up with the oncoming train car so it could be maneuvered into the Roundhouse for repairs.
My grandson, Coleman and I toured the North Carolina Transportation Museum back in August of 2021. We did not ride on the turntable bridge, however, for an additional cost visitors are able to do so if they so desire.
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is a 3 ft ( 914 mm) narrow-gauge heritage railroad that operates on 64 miles (103 km) of track between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, in the United States. The railroad is named for 2 geographical features along the route; the Cumbres Pass and the Toltec Gorge. It was originally part of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad’s narrow-gauge network. It is jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico and has been since 1970. The very first rails for this line began to be laid down on February 20, 1980.
We are not always lucky enough to actually see a train traveling along the Railroad Trestle. I captured this particular video back on November 28, 2020 on one of the many trails Coleman & I hiked at the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Hope you enjoy as much as we did when we watched it chugging down along the tracks.
