2025 Monochrome Madness #45 —- Ceramics

Early American Pottery

Brian from Bushboys World is this week’s host for Monochrome Madness he has given us a wide range of options to explore and choose from to select our own interpretations for his theme of Ceramics.

Here are my entries for this week’s challenge …

2025 Thursday Trios: 09 October

Chugging Along

Five days a week as I wait at the bus stop before (with Coleman) school and after school (waiting for Coleman), I watch the Norfolk Southern Trains chug chug chugging up and down the railroad tracks. Coleman loves to watch the trains (he would love to ride in one one day). Sometimes when I am waiting for him to arrive back at the bus stop in the afternoon I’ll capture the Norfolk Southern Trains chug chugging along with my smartphone. Then he’ll watch the train later in the afternoon.

Here is a trio gallery of the Norfolk Southern Trains as they zoom past me standing on the corner.

2025 Monochrome Madness (MM) #41 — Movement

Monochrome Movement

at the Concert

This week Leanne is hosting the Monochrome Madness challenge. She has chosen a theme of Movement to spark our interest and inspire our creativity.

Here are my selections for the challenge …

We arrive at the Town’s concert early not just to obtain our choice seats, but also to allow Coleman to run around with friends and burn off excess excitement and energy prior to the start of the concert events.

He was challenging a friend to hop on one foot and she was trying to show him how to do cartwheels. They had a fun time playing together last Friday evening.

Before long it was time for the Rick Hubbard’s Kazoobie Kazoo Kids Show. Rick was an outstanding guest musician entertaining the audience and involving the kids in attendance in his show. Here he is playing both a banjo and a Kazoo while entertaining everyone in attendance.

2025 Monochrome Madness (MM) — Scenes from a Playground

Schroering Forest Playground

Anne Springs Close Greenway

Good Day! This being an off week for Monochrome Madness I am doing my own thing, not following with Sand patterns or fence posts like Leanne or Brian. Hope you will not tire of seeing my grandson, Coleman.

Today I am continuing the Coleman’s adventures in the Greenway from his birthday adventures. After cooling off in the Spillway, it was drying off time which (for Coleman) meant playtime in Schroering Forest Playground.

The Schroering Forest Playground is nestled amongst trees a short distance from the Domtar Forest Porch (featured here) where we relaxed sipping cool refreshing water.

Climbing Structure
for ages 5 and Up

The climbing structure is Coleman’s favourite area to play in the Schroering Forest Playground. He has always loved to climb and is not afraid to climb anything (even though, I think his mom is sceptical). She’s probably worried he’ll fall, however, I’m not worried he climbs anything and everything anytime anywhere.

The Schroering Forest Playground was constructed in the Lake Haigler Entrance to Anne Springs Close Greenway in 2024. The intention of this unique playground is to reteach children how to play in the woods.

A mom (aka Coleman’s mom)
watching her son
enjoying the Playground.

The playscape and structures are specially crafted to help activate sensory skills, foster creativity and problem-solving through free play, reduce stress, increase physical activity, develop confidence in the outdoors, improve cognitive abilities and facilitate outdoor learning. Key features of the Schroering Forest Playground include a central climbing structure for older children and a corresponding structure for younger guests.

I’ve been taking Coleman to play in the woods and interact with nature since he could walk. He prefers being outdoors and in the woods over being in the house any day. He enjoys hiking all the trails in Anne Springs Close Greenway and if he can combine hiking with playing all the better as far as he is concerned.

The Silence

of an

Afternoon Walk

On Sunday, Coleman and I took a detour on our walk home from church. We stopped by the local Goat Island Park and Greenway to get a short hike in and permit him to play for a little while before heading back home.

Instead of just using the main camera on my iPhone, I decided to use the fusion camera to do a bit of black and white photography.

The Calmness of the

On Early Sunday afternoons we experience the Silent peaceful serenity surrounding the River and Trails.

2025 Monochrome Madness (MM) #38 – Starting with an H

H’s in ASCG

H’s were not hard for me to locate for this week’s MM challenge. Why was it so easy? We just recently took Coleman to visit the Horses at Anne Springs Close Greenway. He loves to visit and spend time loving on the Horses.

H is for Horses, Horse Stables and Hay …

Naturally, where you find Horses you’re sure to find plenty of Hay and Hay bales when you visit the Greenway Stables.

H is for Hay and Hay Bales …

Now for a visit to one of the other four entrances to the Greenway. What’s a visit to the Lake Haigler entrance without a hike down to gaze over Lake Haigler.

H is for Lake Haigler …

However, to visit all of Lake Haigler you’ll need to go on a Hike on Haigler Loop.

2025 MM #35 — Through the Woods

Monochrome Madness

Leanne Cole has chosen the theme of Woods, Rainforests, and Bushland for this week’s Monochrome Madness Challenge. For Coleman and I, every time we go hiking we are hiking through the woods along one trail or another. These are from our hike on Saturday at Riverside Park and Greenway.

There is a dirt trail a few feet away from the main fishing pier which Coleman loves to hike. A few yards down the trail is a large sand area close to the South Fork Catawba River. It has been raining quite a bit here lately, so the trail was muddy but still doable.

Here you can see Coleman hiking along the muddy dirt trail through the Woods pulling his Little Tike Dump Truck/Excavator. He enjoys playing the sand and this trail and sand pit is conveniently close to our home.

My Dad — My Forever Hero

HN Nornal Hule Waters

U.S. Navy Veteran

May 24, 1929 – December 31, 1996

USS Consolation

My dad is the very first military veteran I ever met. I have of course had other very close friends and relatives who were also military veterans, however, they do not compare to the importance of my very first military veteran.

In honor of the United States Celebration of Memorial Day and in memory of my father’s birthday I am dedicating this post to my late father, Nornal Hule Waters.

Nornal Hule Waters was born and raised in South Carolina. After completing high school he joined the United States Navy on September 24, 1948 when he was nineteen (19) years of age. He attended basic training in San Diego, California at the Naval Training Center (NTC) located in the Balboa Park area. His specialized training was conducted at the Balboa Naval Hospital.

After completion of his training at Balboa Naval Hospital he was stationed on the USS Consolation where he served as a hospital corpsman. Nornal dedicated four (4) years of his life to the United States Navy before his discharge on September 12, 1952.

He served his country with honor aboard the USS Consolation during the Korean War. During his time of service he was issued fuel rations which he had to use sparingly.

2025 Throwback Thursday Doors: 15 May

Ford Model T

Ford introduced the Model T in 1908. It was Ford’s universal car that put THE WORLD ON WHEELS. Henry Ford wanted the Model T to be affordable, simple to operate, and durable. The vehicle was one of the first mass production vehicles, allowing Ford to achieve his aim of manufacturing the universal car.

Ford Model T

This particular Ford Model T was owned and operated by my late maternal grandfather, Harvey Martin Watson. It is one of the earliest automobiles which I have photos of that were given to me by my maternal grandmother after his passing in 1968. I cherish all of my grandfather’s photos, they contain so much family history within them.

1925? Ford Model T

Harvey Martin Watson
and oldest son
Marvin Houston Watson

On another note; my Paternal Great Grandfather, Thomas E. Waters also owned a Ford Model T. I have a photocopy (somewhere in my files) of a newspaper article from June 1928 which states that my Great Grandfather, Thomas E. Waters was racing his Model T against a car my Grandfather, John Thomas Waters drove. They were racing down the old country road between Lancaster and Bethune, South Carolina when the Model T flipped killing him and injuring his daughter, Francis Penelope Waters (My Paternal Aunt). This is a sad, but true story which I hadn’t known about until I began researching our family history. Model T’s were not designed for speeding down old country back roads.

Cramerton Concert

The last Friday of the month from March through September the Town of Cramerton holds a Concert Event in the Park. The Concerts will feature artists (singers, bands, musicians) from different genres each month. With a different Genre each Concert the Town hopes to please the musical interests of practically every member of the community.

March’s Concert’s main feature was a band entitled Small Town Sunday. Small Town Sunday performed a mixture of Country music, Christian music, and Christian Country music. The group featured a trio of singers; Matt Branch, Holly Branch and Stephen Robertson plus a drummer, a keyboard musician, and guitarist. The music was fantastic, Coleman and I really enjoyed their music. A couple of song titles they performed are “THE DAYS HE CAN BELIEVE” (written in honor of Matt Branch’s father) and “That’s What I Love About Sunday.”

Here are a few photos I captured during the concert from my iPhone in Black and White.

2025 MM #31 — Downtown Cramerton at Night-Time

Centennial Center

I’m not usually out at early evening or night time. I have trouble seeing in the dark so Coleman and I are usually always back home before it turns dark. This past Friday, The Town of Cramerton was having a Concert in Centennial Center Park. The Concert did not start until six in the evening, which is still light due to the time change to Daylight Saving Time.

I wanted Coleman to experience the Concert in the park, so we went. We arrived early and found a suitable spot to lay our blanket and sit in the grassy area.

While waiting for the Concert to begin, I snapped shots of the area both with my camera and my iPhone. I shot all these using my iPhone’s fusion camera and captured the area in black and white. Other Special Events will take place the last Friday of each month through the end of Summer. I’ll think about us attending those events when the time comes nearer.

Here are some of what I captured Friday evening.

2025 Monochrome Monday

Discarded & Unused

It is interesting sometimes what Coleman and I run across while hiking. Things like posts with no apparent rhyme or reason (even if there is one), a discarded trash can (all the Greenway Trash cans are large with a Goat on them & are accompanied by a recycling bin), or a board discarded and tossed into the river. I’ve been teaching Coleman to LEAVE NO TRACE, so he notices when things have been left behind and discarded without thought of keeping the environment safe and clean.

These are examples of what we found discarded and left behind this week.

Post with no sign
or reason for being there
(it probably had a sign at one time).
Discarded trash can,
don’t know why someone
would even bring one
to the Greenway
except for maybe fishing.
Discarded board tossed into the river.
( We need to keep our rivers safe from contamination.)

1-to-3 Photo Processing: 2025 February

Walking around Riverside Park and Greenway this week along a dirt trail Coleman and I came across this small tree with a few Green Sprouts popping amongst a sand-filled area near the South Fork Catawba River. Its location seemed an oddity, life beginning anew.

Here’s playing around with varying aspects of the image …

2025 Which Way Challenge (CWWC): February Week 4 — Any Which Way — Your Choice

Welcome back to the Which Way Challenge . For this week you may choose Any Which Way, just be sure your Which Ways are clearly distinguishable.

For this week I have chosen to show various Which Ways in Black and White/Monochrome. You do not need to post Monochrome Which Ways unless you desire to do so. My Which Ways consists of paved roads, pathways, sidewalks and tracks. Choose your own Which Ways, you your image, be creative, be uniquely you in your inspired style and selections.

That’s all for this week. Next week will be CWWC: Any which way with lines.

With much appreciation for those who entered this past week, click on the links below to check out their Which Ways.

Up in the Air in Monochrome

Above the Trees

I’m learning to use the Fusion camera’s Monochrome features in my new iPhone 16 Pro Max. While Coleman was playing out back on one of our rare warm winter days, I looked up into the sky and saw a small group of black birds flying through the air. I pointed my iPhone towards the sky in hopes of capturing shots of the birds as they flew overhead of us. Cease the Moments. Enjoy the World around you. Capture the Memories each day.

2025 CPC: Black and White w/Coleman +

The Cosmic Photo Challenge prompt for this week is Black and White. Looking through this past week’s photos from Coleman and my visit to Goat Island Park and Greenway, I found few that I think would work for this challenge.

Here is what I have chosen for this week’s CPC prompt.

Now to show some of what I took today of Coleman using my new iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Also Monochrome GeometricJanuary

These Throwback images are from my maternal grandfather’s collection of photos I was given from my maternal grandmother after his passing back in 1968. The photo images were originally on personal post cards.

Not sure, but

I have always thought these were taken in Deep Gap, North Carolina, but I am not one hundred percent (100%) sure. My maternal grandfather did work for a time for a coal mining company.

2024 MM #23: Clouds in Monochrome

This week Brian from Bushboys World is the host for Monochrome Madness. His choice for the Monochrome Madness theme this week is Clouds.

Here are my contributions:

Let’s first take a look at a couple of image comparisons between an original color versus the converted black and white version of photo imageries of clouds.

The first three black and white photos in the left-hand column are from my archives and the other four phots are from my outlook in Apple iPhone’s Silverstone black and white feature of today’s cloudy skies.

2024 MM: Children’s Concert/Karaoke

Monochrome Madness-Music

Margaret from From Pyrenees to Pennines is hosting the Monochrome Madness Challenge this week. She has chosen a theme of Music. Looking forward to seeing what everyone decides to post regarding this theme. Luckily, Coleman and I attended a Children’s Concert last week in downtown Cramerton’s Confluence. Some words to think about before I add my photos …

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed. It soothes the mind and gives it rest. It heals the heart and makes it whole. It flows from heaven to heal the soul.”

~ K.C. Lynn, Resisting Temptation (Men of Honor, #3

When I first decided to take Coleman to the Children’s concert last Saturday, I thought it was going to be a concert especially designed to appeal to children. I did not expect it to be a children’s karaoke show. Most of the children were hesitant to participate; a few banged on the drums and one brave girl sang a couple of songs for the audience while her proud grandfather filmed her singing. Coleman did enjoy listening to the music, however, he enjoyed playing in the playground at Goat Island Park and Greenway better.

2024 CWWC: November Week 4 — Stairs, Steps, and/or Ramps

Cee’s Which Way My Which Way

I’ve missed Cee so much and know this is a difficult time for her and Chris. Praying for strength and comfort for them both. I’ve been trying to keep up with the Which Way Challenge even though Cee is unable to do so. I encourage everyone who wishes to show Cee our Which Ways by posting your Stairs, Steps, and/or Ramps this week. . Just post any Which Way you desire and link up to Cee’s Which Way Challenge.

This week I am again posting a Which Way My Way showing Which Ways one might use by venturing up or down Stairs, Steps, and or Ramps. This week I chose to post my Stairs, Steps, and Ramp in Monochrome. You may use Monochrome, but not necessary. You may choose any format you desire if you choose to participate.

We begin our Which Way by walking down our front Steps

After Coleman exits the school bus, we drop off his school backpack and grab his hiking backpack with snacks and drinks. Then, we head on down to Riverside Park and Greenway for a relaxing afternoon noon of hiking and exploring.

While hiking the trail, we come upon the Stairs to one of several Fishing Piers at the Greenway …

Local Scenes in Black & White

Always trying for a few interesting shots as I walk up and wait for the bus to arrive bringing Coleman back from school. On this day i decided to use the monochrome feature on my iPhone to see what I could capture in Black and White around the neighbourhood. Looking up the road I spotted a train coming down the tracks, later I took a photo of the tracks from below looking upward; trying different angles and viewpoints than my normal viewpoint.

2024 RDP: Wednesday 11.13 — Pull Up a Seat on a SEESAW

The Ragtag Prompt of Seesaw fits right into some of the pictures of Coleman I took this past weekend at Goat Island Park and Greenway. The Goat Island Park’s Playground only opened back up this past weekend after having been closed for renovations to repair damage generated by the strong winds and storms which caused flooding to the Greenway’s Playground and a majority of the rest of the Greenway.

When we went to the playground Coleman was hoping to be able to not only play on the playground’s equipment, but also with other children. However, that is not exactly how it worked out. Yes, he was able to play on the various playground equipment including the Seesaw, but not with other children. Other parents or grandparents kept their children at a distance from other children playing in the playground. Thus the many facial expressions displayed by Coleman. He found it difficult to enjoy playing on the Seesaw especially when no other child would get on the Seesaw with him. I tried getting on the Seesaw with him, however, that didn’t work so we. My end sank all the way to the ground and he was stuck up in the air until I could manage to extend my legs for my end to go up. (Actually I ended up having to get off for his end to come down.) Here are photos of Coleman Pulling Up a Seat on the Seesaw.
