Echinacea Sombrero Salsa Red displays single rows of drooping, deep orange-red ray petals around a sombrero-shaped, orange-brown cone. The lightly fragrant flowers attract butterflies! They provide long lasting color in the garden.

These are reded daisy-like flowers with dark cones and are produced on strong, well branched stems. Echinacea is well known for its large, daisy-like flowers. It is a bold, sturdy perennial sporting flowers with a large cone-shaped center, hence its common name of Coneflower.

It is also known by African Arrowroot, Arrowroot, Canna, Edible Canna, and Wild Canna Lily among a few other names.
The rhizomes of cannas are rich in starch, and have many uses in agriculture. All of the plant material has commercial value, rhizomes for starch (consumption by humans and livestock), stems and foliage for animal fodder, young shoots as a vegetable, and young seeds as an addition to tortillas.
Other interesting uses include the hard black seeds of the Arrowroot having been used in the 19th century as bullets when ammunition was limited. The seeds are also used for making jewelry and musical instruments such as rattles.

Arthel “Doc” Watson (1923-2012), an 8-time Grammy winner, was born down the road in Deep Gap and always remained “Just One of The People,” as this sculpture states. [As a side note: “Doc” is my maternal 4th cousin.]
Doc became part of the Folk Revival and is known worldwide for his flat-picking style of guitar playing. The Town of Boone celebrates Doc Watson Day every year with a concert at the Jones House. This bronze statue of Doc Watson was dedicated on June 24, 2011, and sculpted by Alexander M. Hallmark.

It’s been cold and rainy all week. On Wednesday, Coleman and I decided to try to beat the rain and ventured out to visit Forest at Anne Springs Close Greenway Horse Stables. It was sure cold 🥶 though. However, Coleman enjoyed his time visiting the horses. [Those pictures are saved for another post].

We spotted these Violet and White Flowers by the Gibson House on the way back to the car whilst trying not to get the camera wet. So naturally I had to capture them with a few snapshots. After all I did have my camera around my neck.

It is sometimes grown in gardens for its attractive foliage and flowers, though it can prolifically seed, easily becoming a lawn weed.

Haven’t traveled too far since Covid-19 lockdown, however, in early 2020 I visited relatives in Texas. While there I would walk around the neighborhood or wherever the opportunity arose.

I spotted these lovely flowers while walking around my Aunt’s neighborhood in Abilene, Texas. It was taken with the cell phone I had at the time, an iPhone 11 Pro Max.
