Coleman’s “Porch” Seating Scares His Mom

Pull Up a Seat

for

Six Word Saturday

In the afternoons Coleman enjoys being outdoors and often Pulls Up a Seat on our Home’s Porch railing which would scare his mom half to death if she was at Home. Luckily for him when he chooses to Pull Up a Seat like in the images below his mom is at work and NOT at Home. This week’s post is also being linked with Debbie’s Six Word Saturday and One Word Sunday Challenges.

Skywatch Friday

Early every morning when Coleman and I walk to the bus stop we look up in wonder at the Morning Sky.

Most mornings lately we have had cloudy skies; some white clouds and some dark thunderous clouds, but today not so.

Today, the skies were clear with “stars” shining brightly. What I did not realize until after Coleman was on the bus and I was back home was that the brightest “Stars” we were seeing were not actually “Star” at all.

What we really saw in the early morning skies were the planets Venus, Jupiter and more dazzling images.

Snow Gone too Soon, Now Icy

For some snow last longer than others depending on your location. In the southeast, snow is not a yearly occurrence. The last Snow we saw was in late January of 2022, three years ago. This year we only received a dusting of snow before it changed to a wintry mix ending with freezing rain.

Now for a look at The Day After …

For my friends in Atlanta, Georgia, they welcomed the snow. They had plenty for their to be played in, but alas it won’t last for long there either.

And my friend’s view in Van Wyck, South Carolina …

Delighted Seeing the Bird Feeder Activity

After we moved into our new place Coleman insisted, we needed a bird feeder. He watches the bird feeder every day to see if any birds come to eat from it. It was slow in the beginning, but after the birds investigated the feeder and spread the word, we have had plenty of activity on the feeder. However, the majority of activity seems to occur in the mornings after Coleman goes to school. He is delighted when he can see birds enjoying the feeder.

Who Invited Mr.Grinch to the Parade?

This week has been a week for Christmas Parades in our area. Have you been to a Christmas Parade yet this year? Coleman and I have actually been to two different Christmas Parades this week. One was in the neighbouring town of Belmont and the other one was in our Town of Cramerton.

To our amazement, one of the first people was saw as we approached the Parade site yesterday was Mr. Grinch all decked out for the Christmas Parade.

Who do you think kicked off the Parade? Well, what’d you know, it was Mr. Grinch himself. Mr. Grinch made his appearance throughout the Parade in one manner or another. We never knew when or how he would appear. It didn’t matter how or when, people enjoyed seeing Mr. Grinch and the entire Parade. You may click on each photo for enlarged viewing.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum — Unique Perspective

St. Simons Lighthouse is one of only five remaining Georgia lighthouse towers. The Lighthouse and keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1872. The original Lighthouse which this Lighthouse replaced was built in 1810 by James Gould of Massachusetts, the first lighthouse keeper. The original Lighthouse was destroyed by Confederate forces in 1861 in order to prevent the beacon’s use by Federal troops during the Civil War.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse

The Lighthouse still serves as an active aid to navigation for ships entering St. Simons Sound, casting its beam as far as 23 miles to sea. The Lighthouse is located near the pier on the southern tip of St. Simons Island, Georgia, United States of America. Its purpose is to guide ships into St. Simons Sound and warns them of the many sandbars in the area.

Inside St. Simons Island
Lighthouse Museum

In 1972, the lightkeepers’ cottage was leased to Glynn County. The Coastal Georgia Historical Society spent three years restoring the two-story Victorian light keepers’ cottage at the base of the lighthouse, which was then converted into a museum.

St. Simons Island
Lighthouse Museum

Currently, the public can tour the museum and climb the 129 steps to the top of the Lighthouse for a view of St. Simons Sound and the surrounding area. The admission cost to tour the Lighthouse Museum and climb the 129 steps is $12 for adults; $6 for ages 6-12; $2 Military discount is offered with Valid Military ID. Children under 6 are free.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse
and View from the Top

Some of the spectacular, panoramic views of the coast including Jekyll Island, the mainland (Brunswick), and the south end of St. Simons Island can be seen from the top of the Lighthouse.

The Keeper’s Dwelling is a two-story Victorian structure which was the home of the lighthouse keepers from 1872 up until the 1959’s. It currently houses the Lighthouse Museum and includes interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and period rooms that reveal the history of St. Simons Island and the life of a lighthouse keeper.

How High Is Enough to Leap?

I never thought about squirrels leaping or jumping from the ground to high branches in trees before. Normally, I see squirrels clambering up trees or from tree to tree. This week we literally saw a squirrel leap (or jump) from the ground to a branch high up in a tree in one swift effortless movement.

Evidently, high enough is however high a squirrel wants to leap to reach its destination.

Cascading the Catawba River with Coleman

I was just thinking about the many times Coleman and I have enjoyed hiking together along the Catawba River when the RDP (Ragtag Daily Prompt) appeared showing the today’s prompt to be River. Our minds seem to be in sync on thinking about River.

We’ve had a tremendous amount of rainfall recently and so I’ve been remembering beautiful sunny days spent with Coleman at the Catawba River. I’ve had photos of the Catawba River come across in my Google photos app as memories.

These are some of the memory photos that I’ve enjoyed looking over this week.

The Gragg Cemetery is one of several burial sites for my maternal paternal (my mother’s father’s) ancestors. Asa and Irene Watson are my second great aunt and uncle on my mother father’s side of the family. I have not been to visit the cemetery since before the shut down in 2020. This photo was taken when I visited the Watauga County, North Carolina area back in March of 2012. I have been limited recently in my transportation resources, but I hope to visit the area soon (probably not until spring … I do not want to drive in snowy conditions.)

Papantla Flyers in Costa Maya, México

Looking back in time to Sunday, February 23, 2020; I remember walking off the Enchantment of the Sea Caribbean cruise ship onto the docks of the Costa Maya Port and seeing an amazingly entertaining sight.

When I first saw the ritualistic performance, I didn’t realize exactly what I was watching, however, I later learned that I was observing four men dancing in the sky.

Would you SIT
on top of an
80 foot pole?

These four dancers are tied by their feet with long ropes; they descend to the ground as the ropes unwind and fly around the pole. There is a fifth dancer who remains at the top of the pole, playing the flute and drum. This ceremony is not just for mere entertainment to display bravery and courage, but it actually has a much deeper, more valuable meaning.

The Papantla Flyers are also known as the Voladores de Papantla or Birds from Earth. The Dance of the Voladores or Papantla Flyers is a pre-Hispanic ritual that originated in Papantla, Veracruz, Mexico. The Papantla Flyers is the most famous of the Totonac dances.  This ancient Mesoamerican ritual is used to ask the gods to end a drought and bring rain for crops during extended dry seasons. It is said that the brave men falling symbolizes the fall of raindrops from the sky in the search of earth’s fertility. The flute represents the singing of a bird, and the drum resembles the voice of the gods; similar (almost) to the sound of a thunderstorm. In the past, the ritual began by choosing and cutting the tree from which they would take the flying post.

As a tourist this traditional ritual of the Papantla Flyers was stunning yet seemed dangerous. To the locals, it is a normal common and ancient tradition. It was amazing to watch even though I doubt that I would ever climb that high on any pole. Rest assured that these men who perform the important ceremony have been trained since childhood to perform this ritual. The tourists, like me, in actuality only see the final part of the ceremony.
