A Horse Poses for Portrait

While visiting the horses on an outing to the Greenway, it seemed like this particular horse was posing for us showing us every possible angle.

The horse was tethered to the railing across from the Historic Tack Shed waiting patiently for its rider to return.

Almost all the horses stabled at the Greenway are privately owned and cared for by their owners. If asked a lot of the owners will allow you to gently pet the horse.

I found it fascinating how the horse would first turn one way and then another as if showing off all of its beautiful features.

Longing for Times of Bygone Days

Egidio from Through Brazilian Eyes is this week’s host for the Lens-Artist Photo Challenge with her theme of Longing. I took some time thinking about what I wanted to select to showcase a few things I am Longing.

Longing for times of bygone days, remembering the good times, the friendships made, the experiences I’ve had over the years are memories I treasure forever.

I decided to make my selections in Black, White, and Shades of Grey/Gray linking with The Cosmic Photo Challenge & Six Word Saturday challenges.

Longing for road trips, traveling to the mountains, beaches, and favourite places; recalling some of my favourite things.

Showcased in the above gallery are images of a rode trip where my eldest son and I drove through part of the Blue Ridge Parkway stopping at various mileposts to catch a glimpse of the magnificent views. A short distance from a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is where my maternal ancestors lived which emphasizes the significance and importance this area is to my heart.

Memories of bygone days are ones I’ll always cherish, but not all would be worth repeating. Memories of friendships that have stood the test of time are ones worth treasuring.

The above images are a small depiction of bygone days of wonderful events I miss from my childhood. Events of bygone days are lovely to remember, but learning from them and looking forward is extremely essential.

2025 CFFC: September 16 — Hobb(y)ies — Take Two

This week Dan of No Facilities, the host for the Fun Foto Challenge has chosen to continue with the theme of hobby/hobbies for us to continue show images of our hobbies we enjoy doing. This theme gives us a wide range of ideas about what we would like to post.

Last week I shared my hobbies of photography and hiking. I was glad to see some of Dan’s hiking adventures in his post this week. This week I’m displaying images of two different types of hobbies I enjoy.

The first one is my favourite, that of reading. I don’t normally have photos of my reading or of what I’m reading, however, I did find a few in my archives that should demonstrate sufficiently.

The second on here is one I enjoy, but haven’t had much time for lately. It is one that requires a vast amount of time on the computer or out and about in family history libraries, cemeteries, reunions, or genealogical conferences. Have you guessed yet what this hobby might be? If you guessed Genealogy you would be absolutely correct. I love researching and finding out more and more about my ancestors and our family history.

The Waiting room seating was minimal, but sufficient for daily needs.

It turned out she had to schedule an appointment with a different doctor. The one she was scheduled to see was not available. Her new appointment will be next week while Coleman is in school, so we will not be accompanying her.

2025 Thursday Doors: 11 September

I had planned a different post for this week’s Thursday Doors, but then I realized this Thursday is 09.11. I therefore, decided to delay that post until next week and chose instead to Remember our Fallen Heroes from that fateful day on 09.11.2001.

I will never forget that horribly tragically devastating day of loss when 2,977 innocent lives were taken at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Remembering the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, 8 paramedics, and thousands of civilians, each one someone’s parent, sibling, friend, or child.

I Remember the Lives Lost.

I Remember the Sacrifices Made.

I Remember the Heroes Who Answered the Call.

I Will Never Forget.

Thank you for the kindness you demonstrate to everyone, especially the kindness shown to my grandson by several firefighters and police officers.

Cramerton’s StoryWalk

is Coming Soon

What is a StoryWalk? I’ve seen signs like these along other trails in other Greenways, however, I was not previously aware that they were apart of what is considered a StoryWalk.

A StoryWalk is an interactive activity that combines reading with physical activity by displaying pages from a children’s book along a trail.

Using pages from a deconstructed children’s book, a story is displayed along trails or walking paths on poster boards, attached to fences, or encased in outdoor frames. Pages are laminated, attached to signs or podium-style boxes and are accompanied by activity prompts and questions encouraging people to walk to find the next page.

StoryWalks are a fun and innovative tool to engage young readers and encourage activities that build early literacy skills like reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing.

The Cramerton StoryWalk is a permanent installation located along the Goat Island Greenway.

It featuring pages from a children’s picture book displayed on posts and combines reading with outdoor activity for families.

The installation of the StoryWalk was made possible through a grant from the Gaston Association of Realtors.

The StoryWalk concept was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

2025 Sunday Trees: 07 September

Populus deltoides

As scene on our hike at Goat Island Park and Greenway. The Eastern Cottonwood stood out tall and strong amongst the surrounding trees along the trail.

The Eastern Cottonwood is native throughout the Eastern, Central, and South Western United States of America. It also can be found in the Southern Canadian prairies, the southernmost part of eastern Canada, and northeastern Mexico.

The Populus deltoides (Eastern Cottonwood) is a large tree which grows to 20-30 metres (65-100 feet) in height with a trunk up to 2.8 metres (9 ft 2 in) in diameter. It is one of the largest North American Hardwood trees. Its bark is silvery-white, smooth or lightly fissured when young, becoming dark gray and deeply fissured on old trees.

The main Summer Funtime this summer that was different than most any other time were the Summer Concerts the Town of Cramerton held at the end of each month. This was a time to gather downtown to enjoy some fantastic music, visit with others within the community, and basically have a funtastic experience.

Another part of Coleman’s Summer Funtime is visiting different playgrounds. However, this activity is not reserved for just Summertime.

Now to we are almost to the end of our Summertime Review so let’s look at one of Coleman’s favourite things to do … Playing in the Sand.

And Finally last, but not least, Coleman’s ultimate Funtime activity all year long (not just Summertime) and that is hiking. He enjoys hiking out in the woods amongst nature anytime he possibly can get outdoors.

Most of the places I have lived over the years have not allowed for Pets. My family did have a few different dogs over the years. Unfortunately I do not have any photos of them. The one I remember the most was a Chihuahua Dachshund, that I would walk around our neighborhood.

When taking a hike along The Schiele Museum’s Nature Trail, one of the areas you come across is the Catawba Indian Village. A part of the Village are different types of dwellings including a couple of Early Log Cabins.

Curious as Coleman is naturally he likes to enter and investigate anything and everything he possibly can.

This is the view you first see of the cabin when entering the Catawba Indian Village.

Under Construction

Our neighbour’s home has been under construction for a major renovation project since springtime. The whole inside was gutted and renovations began with brand new plumbing, wiring, electrical, and such forth (basically taken down to the bare roots of the building).

We’ve been quietly watching the workers coming and going every day except Saturday and Sunday until recently. Now workers are working almost every single day. The owners come by every Thursday/Friday evening to check on the construction progress. I know they are anxious to be able to get back into their home.

Clematis terniflora

Sweet Autumn Clematis is a fast growing deciduous perennial vine which is adored for its masses of small, fragrant white flowers in late summer and fall. The Sweet Autumn Clematis plants are in abundance everywhere around here.

While being appreciated for their beautiful flowers which grow vigorously and abundantly, they are considered an invasive plant species in many parts of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. The plants aggressive self-seeding and rapid growth can lead to it escaping cultivation and outcompeting native vegetation.

The Clematis terniflora (Sweet autumn clematis) flowers are excellent magnets for attracting pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. As you can see from the images it also attracts wasps like the
Eremnophila aureonotata, aka the gold-marked thread-waisted wasp. The Eremnophila aureonotata are in the family Sphecidae (“thread-waisted wasps”) which belong to the order of Hymenoptera (“ants, bees, wasps and sawflies”).

Early every morning when Coleman and I walk to the bus stop we look up in wonder at the Morning Sky.

Most mornings lately we have had cloudy skies; some white clouds and some dark thunderous clouds, but today not so.

Today, the skies were clear with “stars” shining brightly. What I did not realize until after Coleman was on the bus and I was back home was that the brightest “Stars” we were seeing were not actually “Star” at all.

What we really saw in the early morning skies were the planets Venus, Jupiter and more dazzling images.
