2025 Flower of the Day: 03 June

Caneberries

Caneberries are a group of berries which includes Blackberries, Raspberries, Boysenberries, Loganberries, and a few more varieties. Caneberries grow on tough, woody stems called canes. They are a part of the Rosaceae family and are also known as bramble berries. Caneberries are aggregate fruits, which means that they are made up of many clusters of individual drupelets. They thrive in cool, moist climates.

They are popular for their nutritional value and can be used in various culinary applications. Caneberry harvest typically occurs from June through August.

Caneberries are grouped by four plant characteristics: 1) growth habit (trailing, semi-erect, or erect); 2) fruiting habit (primocane or floricane); 3) presence or absence of thorns (thorny or thornless); and 4) fruit color (raspberries only).

These particular Caneberries are semi-erect; growing upright in the beginning and bending over to trail along the ground if not supported. In the Southern region of the United States, blackberries and raspberries benefit from a trellis for commercial production.

Caneberries are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Caneberries can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, or used in jams, cobblers, ice cream, and other dishes. When they are ripe they can be eaten straight from the plant, which Coleman would have loved to do on our latest hike. Unfortunately for him, they were not ripe yet.

2025 Sunday Stills: Monthly Colour Challenge — #Pastels in Florals

Good Day to everyone! It is a cool spring morning and I’m wishing I was still asleep. However, that’s not possible when it’s a school day for Coleman. Instead of falling back asleep after arriving back home from the bus stop, I’m here writing and fixing to upload another post. Who needs sleep anyway? I’ll probably fall back asleep after arriving a little bit of reading 📖.

Now before I begin reading it is time to show y’all some lovely pastel florals from my neighbours gardens.

2024 CWWC: Which ways with snow or the color white

I have not seen any snow recently or in the past year, so I am going to let y’all see some of the WHITE which I have seen along the various trails that Coleman and I have hiked in 2023.

First up is a hike with the Anne Springs Close Greenway Hiking Club where some of the hikers are wearing white. Everybody was not ready for the photo; I like to catch people unaware when I can. you may also notice the white in the Archers Loop sign and the white clouds in the sky. It was a beautiful, picturesque day.

Next up is the white Riverwalk Bridge as seen from the Piedmont Medical Center Trail that we have hiked with the hiking club and on our own. Coleman loves to hike along the Catawba River whenever we get the opportunity.

This next trail is one Coleman and I hiked on our own. I parked at the Boulder Access Parking lot, and we found the entrance to the trail. We hiked approximately two and a half miles before we turned around and headed back to the car. The trail goes on for miles crossing from North Carolina into South Carolina. We were not prepared to go that distance on this hike.

For another hike we stopped at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden to hike and enjoy the many marvelous flowers grown there. This is the covered walkway leading into the gardens. Notice the vines growing around the white pillars and Coleman trying to balance on the brick edging along the walkway.

FOTD: 2023 September 30_Spotted touch-me-not

Spotted touch-me-not
Impatiens capensis,
the orange jewelweed, common jewelweed,
spotted jewelweed, jewelweed,
spotted touch-me-not, or orange balsam

Impatiens capensis, also known as, Jewelweed has a long history of use in Native American medicine. When applied topically, sap from the stem and leaves is said to relieve itching and pain from a variety of ailments, including hives, poison ivy, stinging nettle, and other skin sores and irritations.

Jewelweeds are found in locations all over the Piedmont region and other areas of the Carolinas. As you can see from the top picture the flowers are rather small. They feature 1″ long, rear-spurred, cornucopia-shaped, orange to orange-yellow flowers with reddish-brown spotting.

The flowers bloom from June to frost. Each flower dangles from a leaf axil on its own slender stalk. It is a herbaceous annual that may grow 3 to 5 feet tall. It can be naturally found in areas of moist soil including forests, streambanks, and bogs.

These particular Spotted touch-me-nots are located along a dense moist trail behind an unused soccer field. The dirt trail winds around and contains many elevated manholes which are accessible to city or county utility officials.

We have seen Jewelweeds in other areas we have hiked but until searching for more information I had not known the many medicinal applications it contains. They are attractive to hummingbirds for their nectar from June until early frost.
