Times Are A Changing … They’re Changing

Times are a changing, always changing. Before Christmas, during a special concert by our local high school choral ensemble, heard them sing an old Bob Dylan song called “The Times They Are A-Changing.” It got me to thinking about how our lives are a changing all the time. Bob Dylan wrote the song in the mid-1960’s as an anthem of change. To find out about the song’s lyrics and the meaning and cultural context click here.

Our lives, our world changes every single day; every decision we make changes our lives. Whether our decisions change where we work, where we live, who we associate and/or communicate with, these factors bring about change in our lives, in our world.

I’ve lived in four different states, from the east coast to the west coast, and in between. Each city, each state there is adaptation to the new environment, the new surroundings (home, work, people, etc.). Probably the first major decision that facilitates change in one’s life (I know mine) was the decision to go away to college. That definitely brought about change.

Then there’s decisions about marriage, children, where to work, where to live … decisions are constantly changing us. We always hop those changes will be for our betterment, but that not always the case.

Let’s not go off on tangents about this and that that had our lives changing. Today, I want to discuss the changes a new baby (aka Sophia Ruthann) has affected my life, my family (especially Coleman’s), and how Sophia is growing and changing on a daily basis.

As many of you read (but some of you may not have), my third grandchild, Sophia Ruthann, was born on December 9, 2025. My oh my, how that has changed our home life (especially Coleman’s, but that’s a discussion for another day). Sophia is common need of attention; feeding, changing diapers, changing clothes, changing possessions; always changing.

Sophia’s growth changes …

At Birth

  • Weight: 6lbs. 2 ozs.
  • Height/Length: 18.5 inches
  • Head Circumference: 13 inches

As of January 14, 2026

  • Age: 1.5 months
  • Weight: 8lbs. 13.4oz.
  • Height: 20.866 inches
  • Head Circumference: 14.271654 inches

And those are the only changes she’s making in her growth development. Sophia is already teething (confirmed by her doctor), she scoots on her stomach across the room, and she is already rolling from her stomach onto her back. She enjoys facing outward when she’s in your lap, her attention and focus is drawn to the television when we are watching “Bones.”

Click on each image to enlarge.

Our lives, my life will never be the same since she came into my world. My focus and responsibility was solely on Coleman before she was born. Believe me, Coleman is extremely jealous of the attention Sophia receives (and not just from me). Coleman has been my whole world for six years and now changes are happening. Time and focus is split. Times are a changing, they’re changing our lives every moment of everyday.

What changes are occurring in your lives, in your world?

Buc – ee’s

For Dan’s Thursday Doors

Buc-ee’s opened its first South Carolina location on May 16, 2022. On the way back home from our mini-vacay in Myrtle Beach we had our first opportunity to visit South Carolina’s Buc-ee’s in Florence, South Carolina off Interstate 95, Exit 170. This location is enormous inside and out.

Buc-ee’s is a comprehensive travel stop offering 120 fueling positions, exceptionally clean restrooms, with twenty-four (24) hour service. It has a wide variety of merchandise including Buc-ee’s branded clothing, toys, home decor and a wide range of snacks and drinks. It not only has prepackaged food options, but also offers freshly prepared items made in-house, such as Texas barbeque, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, and a large selection of jerky and pastries.

This was not a food or gas stop for us, however, it was much needed for stretching our legs and restroom break before continuing on the road. I enjoyed looking around to check out what all this location had to offer. [I had previously been in Buc-ee’s when I was visiting in Texas in 2020.]

Click on each image to enlarge.

Coleman was amazed at the vastness of the store. He met “Buc-ee” and of course, I took his picture next to Buc-ee and the Buc-ee’s General Motors Truck which was loaded with Buc-ee’s branded merchandise.

If you ever have the opportunity to stop at a Buc-ee’s location, you’ll be surprised and amazed at its size and the tremendous diversity of items it offers.

A Free Night at the Museum

On Thursday, Courtesy of Duke Energy, The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium was free from 5 pm until 8pm. Being at the right price (free) and knowing Coleman was wanting to visit the museum again, we took him for the free Night at the Museum.

This free night given to the community by Duke Energy was filled with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activities throughout the museum. Coleman was so excited to be back in the museum, we didn’t get to every activity. He did enjoy the STEM science activity; it had him cutting and crunching green leaves to create Chlorophyll.

Coleman’s mom & baby Sophia joined us at the Museum. What section of the Museum do you think Coleman wanted to visit first? If you said the Dinosaur Exhibits you were correct.

Coleman enjoyed his free night at The Schiele Museum of Natural History. It is a terrific place to visit for all ages.

Friendly Beach Visitor

This Shiba Inu dog was visiting Myrtle Beach from New Jersey. Before Coleman greets or pets any dog he asks permission from its owner.

Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu was a very friendly older dog that was all too happy to have a rest and take pleasure in a bit of petting attention from Coleman.

Coleman & dog

The Shiba Inu is a small-to-medium, fox-like hunting dog breed from Japan. They are known for their loyalty, good nature, and charming appearance.

It is considered to be an alert, affectionate, and independent breed with high intelligence. It can also be somewhat stubborn and strong-willed. (We saw no evidence of stubbornness, only very affectionate and even tempered)

The Wicked Tuna Restaurant

Last Friday while we were visiting Myrtle Beach, Coleman and I took a stroll along the beach northward towards the 2nd Avenue Pier. He was looking for seashells by the seashore as we walked along the water.

Myrtle Beach, SC

At the 2nd Avenue Pier is a restaurant called The Wicked Tuna. (We did not stop and try out their menu, maybe another time).

The Wicked Tuna is a premier waterfront dining establishment, a place where friends gather for a unique culinary experience. The restaurant offers fresh handmade cocktails (I’ll skip those), the freshest seafood (I enjoy quality Tuna Steaks), steaks, and sushi (not a sushi fan, but my daughter is).

The Wicked Tuna is known for its “Hook to Plate” fresh seafood philosophy, stunning ocean views and rooftop bar. (The views of the Atlantic Ocean were stunningly beautiful as Coleman and I walked along the seashore down to the pier and back to our resort hotel.)

The Wicked Tuna has a second location in Murrells Inlet overlooking the MarshWalk. Every week their fishing fleet heads out into the Atlantic Ocean to catch the freshest Grouper, mahi-mahi, sea bass, and snapper off the Carolina coast. They only serve fish caught locally by their own boats which are then cleaned and prepped on-site in their fish house.

2025/6 CFFC: Full or Empty of Nostalgia

Good Day Everyone! I am a week late on my Nostalgia post, however, it was not Intentional to do so. I had intended to post about what brought Nostalgia to mind last week, but it fell by the wayside. Enjoying the last week of 2025 at the beach with family was more important.

While on our mini vacay at Myrtle Beach, we took an adventure south down to Murrells Inlet. Our Murrells Inlet adventure was Intentionally planned ahead and also sparked a bit of Nostalgia. You might wonder why Murrells Inlet would spark Nostalgia within me. You see, back in the early 1970’s my family took a trip down to Murrells Inlet with my dad’s sister and her family. We had some similarities, some differences between then and now. Memories are vague, but my dad’s old photographs (in my possession) bring those times back to life.

This past week we enjoyed Nature’s beauty on the water and on the beach. We had an amazing afternoon/early evening on the water on the Crazy Sister Marina’s boat. [Same pier, different boat]. I have pictures with my cousins and family on a Fishing boat for an afternoon of deep sea fishing. [Then a Fishing Boat, Now a Sightseeing Boat].

Back to the here and now, the Crazy Sister Marina was Full of boats, the sky was Full of birds, my view of the waters were Empty/Void of what we were supposed to be seeing. After all, we were on a Dolphin Sightseeing Cruise and I wasn’t able (nighttime visibility impairment) to see the Dolphins like Coleman and others were able to see.

The afternoon enjoyment was Intentional and was not Empty, but Full of excitement, anticipation, and an Abundance of Amazement and Wonderful memories.

2026 Monday Portrait: 05 January

First Portrait for 2026

We are in our first week of 2026; what a week it has been. We spent the week in Myrtle Beach relaxing, “sightseeing,”visiting various attractions, and enjoying time on the beach. [More about those activities to come in future posts].

For the first Monday Portrait of 2026, let’s check out the Southern Stingrays At Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This was Coleman’s first trip to the beach, he was extremely excited about being at the beach, as well as seeing the many different species of “fish” at Ripley’s Aquarium.

Let’s take a look now at the fascinating Southern Stingrays …

Southern Stingrays

The Southern Stingray (Hypanus americanus) is a whiptail stingray which is typically found in tropical and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, from as far north as New Jersey all the way down to southern Brazil.

Even though we didn’t actually see them in the Atlantic Ocean, we (especially Coleman) were thrilled to see & pet them at Ripley’s Aquarium.

Coleman viewing
the Southern Stingrays

It is adapted for life on the sea bed, as you can see here they swim very close to the bottom most of the time, but not always.

Southern Stingrays
lying on the sea bed

Southern Stingrays are nocturnal predators, they spray water from their mouths or flap their fins vigorously to disturb the surface in order to expose hidden prey.

A Southern Stingray
on the Aquarium sea bed.

Hypanus americanus exhibit wave-like locomotion using their pectoral fins. The wave-like locomotion allowed them to escape predators, forage efficiently, and generally maneuver quickly.

The Southern Stingrays were exciting and interesting to watch swimming and foraging in the aquarium at Ripley’s Aquarium.

Happy Birthday Jesus!

Light of the World

Last night Coleman and I attended our church’s Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. It was an evening to celebrate the Birth of Jesus through the singing of Carols, Lighting the final Advent Candle ( the White Candle), and partaking of Communion.

The Advent Wreath
with the four
outer Candles lit.

The White Candle in the Advent Wreath is placed in the center and is either lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The White Candle is called the Christ Candle. It is generally lit on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It symbolizes Christ’s purity, holiness, and his role as “The Light of the World” who overcomes the darkness, thus fulfilling the Hope and anticipation of the season.

The Advent Wreath
after the Center
White Candle
has been lit.

The outer four Advent Candles (3 purple, & 1 pink) mark the Sundays of Advent. They represent Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. The White Candle signifies the arrival of Jesus Christ as the Pure, Sinless Saviour. All throughout Advent, the lighting of the Candles each week including the Center White Candle all point to the coming of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World. The purpose in lighting the Advent Candles especially the White Candle is to remind Christians that Jesus is the fulfillment of Advent prophecies as well as the true light which brings Hope, Salvation, and Peace into the World.

Near the conclusion of the service, during Communion, all in attendance light their individual candles from the Advent Christ candle. The lighting of individual candles from the Christ candle symbolizes our individual roles as bearers of Christ’s “Light to the World.” It creates a powerful visual of the Gospel spreading to all the World.

An Individual Lit Candle

2025 RDP: Tuesday —Present!

“Silver and Gold have I none, but such as I have I give unto thee …” (Acts 3:6)

You might not think this would apply to this time of year, however, I think it very much applies to. Presents, I do not need; but your Presence would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

When Jesus was born, the Magi (also referred to as Wise Men) brought gifts (Presents) of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They came not just with their Presents, but also with their Presence. The Wise Men came to show their respect by being Present and giving Presents with significant meaning and importance.

The gift of Gold was honourable and symbolically respectful of Jesus’ Kingship and royalty. The gift of Frankincense signified their worship of the newborn king, honouring Jesus’ divinity and priesthood. The gift of Myrrh was a foretelling of Jesus’ mortality, suffering, and impending death. The Presents, from the Magi, acknowledged Jesus as King, God, and Savior. They also served practical purposes for Joseph and Mary to help meet their needs.

Yes, we all like to receive Presents during this holiday season, but Presents are not as important to me as having your Presence here with me. Now I know children (aka Coleman) does not understand that our Presence together is more meaningful than receiving Presents. One day, he may learn and appreciate our Presence together, but for now he should would enjoy receiving Presents for Christmas.

Merry Christmas!

2025 RDP: Sunday —Infructescence

Cluster of Bald Cypress cones

These Bald Cypress trees are resilient and have the ability to grow in very wet conditions, even standing in water. These are grown near the South Fork Catawba River in Riverside Park and Greenway.

The Cypress cones are the reproductive structures of Cypress trees that develop from the tree’s flowers. What you see here are the female cones, often called seed cones. The little red droplet on the bottom cone looks like resin which is characteristic from a cypress tree.

The Cluster of Bald Cypress cones you see is a perfect example of an infructescence. These cones are actually modified seed cones, and once they mature, they’ll release seeds. It’s interesting to learn how plants develop these unique structures to disperse their seeds. The mature cones contain seeds that are a very important food source for local wildlife, including squirrels, waterfowl, and other birds.

2025 Sunday Stills – Winter Wonderland and Monthly Color Challenge: Cobalt Blue

This week I am combining Terri’s Sunday Stills with her Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge with the themes of Cobalt Blue and Winter Wonderland (Solstice).

First off, how about some Blue on Blue in the Gulf of Mexico (now called Gulf of America) from a cruise I took back in 2020. We were in the middle of the Gulf heading towards Cozumel, Mexico. It’s amazing how except for the other ships at sea, all one sees for miles and miles in practically Blue on Blue.

Visiting the Horses and Trails (at the Greenway)

Leanne’s Monochrome Madness

Whenever Coleman and I have the opportunity to visit Anne Springs Close Greenway we almost always (but not always) visit the horses. Coleman loves horses. The Anne Springs Close Greenway has five different entrances to the Greenway for hiking, mountain biking, or just visiting.

Goats at the Children’s Farm

Last Saturday, Coleman and I went to the Greenway Stables and Farm Entrance to visit the Farm animals and (of course) the horses.

We arrived late due to heavy traffic and congestion on the roads leading to the Greenway Stables. Therefore, we only had a short amount of time to visit the farm animals.

One last look at the Farm
animals before venturing
towards the horses.

Moving on to hiking and visiting the horses stabled at the Greenway. We saw and visited with several owners who were there to enjoy a ride on their horses along the trails.

The rider is up around the bend.

The Greenway has several horse stables scattered along the Dogwood Trail and are maintained by the Greenway staff. Quite a few of the horses are privately owned and as the sign says you’re not supposed to pet or feed the horses. However, some of the owners will allow Coleman to pet their horses. If an owner’s horse is skittish the owner will not recommend petting it or coming too close.

We recommend checking with a horses owner before petting them. The owners are not always present, but when they are they are friendly and usually willing to answer any questions about their horses.

2025 Pull Up a Seat on a Hospital Bed

On Monday evening I received a message from my daughter to meet her at the Atrium Health Hospital in Pineville, North Carolina. We previously arranged, when necessary, for Coleman to spend the night with one of our neighbors whom Coleman adores.

On Wednesday evening, Coleman was brought to the hospital to see his mom. He was not told in advance what he would be seeing when he arrived in her room.

Here he is Pulling Up a Seat on her hospital bed …

At this time, I’m not allowed to post any pictures of whom he was able to meet for the first time (More about that in a future post). Let’s just say, Coleman is a Monster Big Brother now.

Invitingly Beautiful … Sorry, Beach is Closed

Beach at Lake Norman
Ramsey Creek Park

The day we visited Ramsey Creek Park may have been on the chillier side, but that wouldn’t have stopped Coleman from playing in the sand.

One of several signs
near the Beach.

The Beach area was blocked off with signs posted stating the Beach is Closed. We did find smaller areas he could access the sand for a little playtime. We also managed to walk along the edge of the waters of Lake Norman, still it would have been nice if the Beach would’ve been open.

It’s Time to Pull Up a Seat on Santa’s Knee (or Lap)

Last evening our Town of Cramerton held its annual Christmas parade which we were able to enjoy as a family. The Town came out in droves to watch the Parade with the many cars, floats, marching bands, and cheer squads. Parades are fascinating and exciting for the children and adults alike to watch and anticipate. I bet you can guess which part of the parade everyone likes to see the most (especially the children). Yep, you guessed (I least I believe y’all did). Santa Claus arrival at the end of the parade on a shiny red fire engine (at least in our town that’s what he arrives on).

After the Parade is over the children and their families gather at Confluence to await once again for Santa’s arrival. Why do the children excitedly wait with anticipation for Santa at Confluence? Well, of course it for the opportunity to be photographed with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Here are a few shots of Coleman with Santa … more will come later when the Catawba Riverkeepers Foundation sends the link for our free photos. Until then you’ll need to. E satisfied with the ones I captured.

Santa & Mrs. Claus
Uh oh, it seems like Coleman’s
not sure where to sit.
Alright, this spot
might just be fine.
Where am I supposed to look?
Hey Gramdma,
should I be looking at
you or the camera?
Grandma, did you get
my picture all right?
Am I done now?

2025 Cell Pic Sunday: 16 November

Storybook Walk Book 2

Previously on October 5th I shared with you Cramerton’s newly installed Story Walk in Goat Island Park and Greenway along with John Steiner (host of CellPic Sunday). The first Storybook was called “School is more than a Building” written by Kelley Donner. At the time I had not realized the Storybooks would be changing periodically. You may click to view the previous post here and view John’s CellPic Sunday post about the Storybook Walk here.

When Coleman and I went walking through Goat Island Park and Greenway last Sunday we discovered the Storybook for the Storybook Walk had been changed to “The Acorn & The Oak” written by Rhonda Accardo.

These first images of the Storybook were taken with my iPhone. The next set of images were taken with my Canon.

If you ever get the opportunity to be near the Charlotte, North Carolina area, Goat Island in Cramerton is just a short drive south of the Airport. I would highly recommend stopping by to visit this lovely Greenway and take a walk along the Storybook Walk on the paved trail.

Lens-Artists Challenge

# 106: Autumn Plus

Festival of Leaves Week #3

This week John from Journeys with Johnbo is hosting the Lens-Artist Photo Challenge. He has come up with the “Looking Back” theme of Autumn. With mainly the Northern Hemisphere being in the Autumnal Season and the Leaves are changing colours, it seems appropriate that we show off our Fall/Autumn colours. I am linking up with Dawn’s Festival of Leaves, which I feel is definitely appropriate due to the Autumn Colours of Leaves being displayed. You can find out more about Dawn’s Festival of Leaves challenge here.

2025 OWS: 05 October — Hanging Around …

There are many ways the term Hanging could be interpreted, such as Hanging around (with friends) Hanging Upside down (like a “monkey”), Hanging In (Being persistent, carrying on under difficult circumstances), or perhaps used as in the expression How’s it Hanging. These types of Hanging are totally different and distinct from Debbie’s example of Curtains Hanging or any other object Hanging.

I’m going to show you some “Hanging” examples of “Like Mother … Like Son.”

Guess what? Someone’s Status is Changing …

Six Word Saturday

Can you guess whose status will be changing? You might ask what kind of status … let me tell you. There will be a status change in our family. Why? Whose status is changing? Coleman’s status is changing hurt by. How is Coleman’s status changing in our family? Can you guess?

These are the reasons Coleman and I were waiting in the Waiting Room.

A Baby Sister

We had to wait for the right time, so Coleman could see the images of his Baby Sister.

Profile of Head

It was difficult for them to get a really good shot of her head. She was facing downward.

You may have figured out Coleman’s status change in the family by the images. If not, Coleman is excited to become a Big Brother.

Coleman’s “Porch” Seating Scares His Mom

Pull Up a Seat

for

Six Word Saturday

In the afternoons Coleman enjoys being outdoors and often Pulls Up a Seat on our Home’s Porch railing which would scare his mom half to death if she was at Home. Luckily for him when he chooses to Pull Up a Seat like in the images below his mom is at work and NOT at Home. This week’s post is also being linked with Debbie’s Six Word Saturday and One Word Sunday Challenges.

2025 LAPC #364 — A Quiet Moment

Quiet Moments can be found in many different and wonderful ways and places. It does not matter where you are, there can always be times for quiet moments.

In the featured image Coleman enjoying some quiet moments communicating in his own way with a horse.

“Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it.”
