Lost Hollow is a section in Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden specifically designed for children. It is also known as The Kimbrell Children’s Garden.
Trumpet pitcher Sarracenia
The garden incorporates nature-inspired play spaces that encourage exploration and interaction with the surrounding environment. The Lost Hollow features an amphitheater, sunken pond, Moonkeep, play spaces and more for the imagination. This garden has been expanded since we last visited. It now includes a 0.4 mile Adventure Trail and Prairie Castle Playground for children to explore and enjoy.
Sarracenia flava
Sarracenia (Trumpet pitchers) are carnivorous North American plants with hollow, trumpet-shaped leaves that trap and digest insects. They lure prey with nectar and bright colours by using slippery, downward-pointing hairs and digestive fluids to capture and absorb nutrients which helps to supplement their diet in low- nitrogen environments.
Yellow Trumpet
The Yellow Trumpets (Sarracenia flava) have tall yellow-green pitchers with red veins which can reach up to thirty (30) inches. Their colouring often changes from yellow-green to a bright yellow in the Springtime. These particular Yellow Trumpets grow near the pond in Lost Hollow.

The Teletype Corp Model 15 dates back prior to World War II and was utilized by Western Union for telegraph communications, news wire services AP) and business. This model was adopted by the U.S. military for its communications network.
Railroad Switch Stand
This type of Switch Stand contains Semaphore signals which were operated manually, with the position of the Red blade and the colour of the light indicating whether the track ahead was clear or occupied.
The Semaphore signals were crucial for communicating with train engineers regarding track conditions and movements, thus ensuring railway safety.

Welcome back to the Which Way Challenge. This Week’s Which Way Challengeare theme is Any Which Way Displaying Winter or Summer. They can be Any Which Way on any Road, Pathways, Walkways, Sidewalks, Stairs, Trail or Dirt Path etc. as long as your Which Ways are clearly visible. As always signs are welcome anytime.
In our neck of the woods, we are in the midst of ongoing back to back winter storms. North of the I-40 usually gets hit with Snow ❄️during the winter months, but south of the I-40 rarely receives more than a sprinkling or trace of Snow accumulation on the ground. This year we have been hit with an extreme Winter Ice Storm followed by an extreme Arctic Winter Snow Storm and winter is not over so there is opportunity for chances of more ice, sleet, or snow before the season is over.
This past weekend the Snow was packed on top of the ice that hadn’t had a chance to melt yet. This made the road (the one next to the railroad tracks) an excellent place for some neighborhood fun. Two of the neighbour families had sleds they brought out and invited Coleman to sledding with them. So naturally, I bundled him best I could (he didn’t have any snow pants, overalls, or any kind of snowsuit) and we met the neighbours at the corner by the tracks.

Looking back to February 2024, I took several shot of flowers in the garden at The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Aka Rocket
The Garden in the Farm at The Schiele Museum is filled with vegetables and flowers each year. New plants are planted from starters at the home of the Farm Caretaker and planted into the garden beds at the Farm. The vegetable plants and flowers are a beautiful sight to behold. The flowers are pollinated from the bees from the hives in the Farm located adjacent to the flower beds.
Aka Arugula
Before researching this plant, Eruca vesicaria, I had no idea that it had multiple common names including Rocket, and Arugula. I knew that Arugula is a green often used in salads, which when eaten has a slightly bitter taste. Arugula is a herb from the mustard family (not a lettuce even though I previously thought it was).

First off, Happy 2026 Everyone! Did you stay awake to bring in the New Year? Did you watch any Fireworks? My daughter and I somehow managed to barely stay awake till midnight to see the New Year arrive. The only fireworks we say were those on the television as the annual ball dropped from New York. We did hear them in our location prior to midnight, but did not venture out anywhere in the chilly night air to watch them being shot off over the ocean.

The top two (2) stadiums are ones my cousins and nieces attend to watch their local sporting events. The third (3rd) stadium in San Diego is the old stadium which served as a venue for both the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Chargers. I only attended Padre games here.

Cajon Speedway El Cajon, California
My dad loved watching car races. He grew up watching NASCAR races. The Cajon Speedway was an oval racetrack near El Cajon, California. The racetrack was originally a 0.25 mile dirt oval track which opened in 1961. In 1964 the track was expanded to a 0.375 mile dirt track and then was paved. The track was located between Gillespie Field and the San Vicente Freeway. The track held many Stock Car races throughout the years. Some of the more notable events were USAC National Midget Series, NASCAR Winston West Series, NASCAR Southwest Series, and the USF2000.
The Cajon Speedway ceased operations after the 2004 season and was demolished sometime after the lease ended in 2005. At this time it is unsure if or when a new NASCAR short track will be built on the property.

The top two (2) are from a horse show held on the grounds of the Lake Haigler Entrance for Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The third (3rd) is of a horse show held at the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now known as the San Diego Safari Park) in 1978.

The first two (2) are of my eldest son’s high school CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) swim finals competition held in 1998 in Long Beach, California. My son competed in the butterfly event and the 4 x 100 meter medley and the 4 x 400 meter medley relays. The third (3rd) is from a paddling competition at the Port O’ Call, San Pedro, California.
Youth Baseball/T-ball Venues …
Here we have Coleman at his T-ball practice and one of his games on the local T-ball field. The last is of our local high school’s baseball field.

These Hydrangeas change colors from seasonally, They change from white to limelight to brown tones in late autumn through winter. They are beautiful regardless of the colours they are displaying.

Cee hosted several challenges over her blogging career and as many know we lost a good friend and mentor earlier this year in March. Cee is missed tremendously, she is in our hearts, our thoughts, and her legacy lives on.

Clematis terniflora, also known as Japanese clematis is a weedy, twining perennial vine in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae that is native to Japan, Korea and central and southern China.
Aka Japanese Clematis, Japanese virgin’s-bower
Japanese Clematis, even though it may look beautiful, it is a vigorous grower in full sun or partial shade and spreads by self-seeding, layering, and runners.
It has escaped cultivation to invade forest edges, right-of-ways, and areas along streams and roads. It climbs other vegetation, forming dense blankets that block sunlight to the plants underneath. The showy white flowers appear in late summer. It is considered an invasive species in some states in the eastern US.

Conoclinium coelestinum also known as Blue Mistflower is a native perennial wildflower. It has fuzzy blue or violet flowers that bloom from late summer to frost. [These just recently popped up in the last week after lots of rain and thunderstorms.]
It is a member of the Asteraceae family. It was formerly classified in the genus Eupatorium, but phylogeneticanalyses in the late 20th century research indicated that that genus should be split, and the species was reclassified in Conoclinium.
The Blue Mistflower is native to the eastern part of the United States of America from New York down to Florida and west to Nebraska and Texas. It can grow up to three (3) feet tall and spreads quickly to form dense groundcover.
This species prefers moist soils and can be found in wood edges, sandy woodlands and clearings, wet meadows and stream banks. It can thrive in a variety of light conditions ranging from shade to full sun. [With the tropical storms and thunderstorms we’ve been experiencing the ground is extremely wet making the conditions viable for the growth of the Blue Mistflower.]
