While visiting The Schiele Museum of Natural History, we paused to check out the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake .
The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is also known by Crotalus adamanteus (its Binomial name).
It is a species of pit vipers belonging to the family Viperidae. They are indigenous to the Southeastern United States of America.
It is the largest rattlesnake species and one of the more heavily venomous snakes in the Americas.
This Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is safely encased behind a large glass window and is accessible by the staff. The staff do occasionally bring out various snakes and other animals for educational purposes.
My daughter has occasionally sat or hung from a tree since she was a teenager. When visiting the Playscape at The Schiele Museum of Natural History a she decided to try to sit in the tree with Sophia.

Tuesday was another free night at the Museum. Free nights are on the second (2nd) Tuesday each month curtesy of Duke Energy. I captured these doors with my iPhone as we walked through the museum.

The Didelphis virginiana, also known as the Virginia opossum, the North American opossum, and is commonly referred to as the possum.

The Opossum is a solitary nocturnal marsupial typically about the size of a domestic cat. They frequently inhabit areas near food sources like trash cans, compost piles, pet food, and gardens. (If you live in a home with an unused dryer vent opening it’d be wise to close it off, possums will and have come into homes via those vents.)

Not only have I seen Opossums come into a home we lived in, we have also known them to eat pet food we have set outside for cats and dogs.

Rosemary is a fragrant herb from the mint family grown in The Farm at The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Rosemary grown in the Garden in the Farm has several qualities that are beneficial for the Garden and the Livestock living in the Farm.
A Natural Pest Repellent to keep mosquitoes and cabbage moths away
Boosts health in crops like sage and cabbage
An aromatic, woody, low-maintenance drought-tolerant evergreen hedging
The aromatic stalks can be used in chicken coops to reduce insects
The leaves can be fed to livestock in small quantities to boost immune systems
It invites beauty and life into the garden by being a magnet for pollinators. It attracts bees, honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
It can be added to feed for cows, goats, sheep, and pigs as a natural phytogenic feed additive.

When taking a hike along The Schiele Museum’s Nature Trail, one of the areas you come across is the Catawba Indian Village. A part of the Village are different types of dwellings including a couple of Early Log Cabins.

Pond Sliders are a species of common, medium-sized, semiaquatic turtles. The most recognized species are the Red-eared slider (T. s. elegans), which is popular in the pet trade and has been introduced to other parts of the world by people releasing it to the wild.

First off, let’s take a look at a TALL building in Abilene, Texas. I visited my Aunt (my mom’s sister) in 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since our plans of visiting other relatives didn’t pan out due to social distancing mandates, I took many long walks around my Aunt’s neighborhood. I was not just out for the exercise, but also to explore the area. I came across this Tall Building on one of my walkabouts.
The Enterprise Tower Abilene, Texas
The Enterprise Tower was originally known as the First State Bank Tower and then Bank of America Building. It was constructed in the early 80’s and completed in 1984. This is the tallest building in Abilene with its twenty (20) stories at Two Hundred Eighty-Five (285) feet (87 meters). It ranks as the 6th tallest building in West Texas.
And now we’ll take a look see at a building on the shorter side of things located at The Schiele Museum of Natural History’s Catawba Indian Village in Gastonia, North Carolina. The Schiele Museum is a favourite place Coleman enjoys visiting. [The museum also has Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕 on display.]
Early Log Cabin
Information listed on the sign in front of the Early Log Cabin …
This log house reflects the rapid change that the Catawba lifestyle was undergoing throughout Scots-Irish and German settlements of this region in the 18th century. This home is a native adaptation of the log cabins being built by these settiers. The first Catawba cabins were built of unhewn logs with shingle roofs and a central smoke hole. These smoke holes began being replaced with chimneys of stone and logs, as seen here, in the mid-1700s.
This Early Log Cabin is one of several different types of homes in the Catawba Indian Village that were once used by the native Catawba Indians in our area.

How lovely to have the prompt of dinosaur. My grandson, Coleman, loves Dinosaurs. We’ve been fortunate this past year to live within a relatively short distance from the local Schiele Museum of Natural History. The most popular exhibits at The Schiele Museum are the Dinosaur exhibits. They are definitely Coleman’s favourites. Every year the Museum has a special Dinosaur Day. On Dinosaur Day, the museum has special activities and events for everyone to enjoy (especially the children) and participate.
Since Coleman loves Dinosaurs so much; we got him a dinosaur backpack, lunchbox, and matching bottle to use for school. We couldn’t forget to add dinosaur shirts, socks, and shoes. He loves all his dinosaur items, even his toy dinosaurs.
