Springing Up New Life Out of Old

First signs of Spring are slowly sprouting up out of the old dry branches of the hydrangea bush in front of the house. It’s odd to see old and new life together, but it’s also wonderful and beautiful. It reminds me that God has made me a new creation …

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

2 Corinthians 5:17
New King James Version

“And the one sitting on the throne said, ‘Look, I am making everything new!’And then he said to me, ‘Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.’”

Revelation 21:5
New Living Translation

God said it, and I believe it. He makes everything new, even the plants, flowers, … when He said everything, He meant absolutely everything is made new.

Rhode Island Red

Bird of the Week CLVIII

Our neighbours have several breeds of chickens in their backyard. They don’t always stay in his yard, sometimes they come a visiting. He has two or three Rhode Island Reds like this one and they tend to fly short distances until they are able to “jump” over the wire fence. When they do they are more than likely going to be caught by Coleman.

Our Neighbours Rhode Island Red

The Rhode Island Red is a popular, hardy American chicken breed (a friend in Texas as some as well). They are known to be excellent producers of large brown eggs (approximately 6-7 eggs per week). Even though most individual chicken owners raise them for their eggs, they are also an excellent source of high-quality meat. It is said that the Rhode Island Red Roosters could be aggressive and not ideal for small children or neighbours. (I think our neighbours Rhode Island Reds must be hens, since hens are more friendly and they haven’t pecked Coleman yet.)

Coleman’s Catch

of the Day

Coleman
and the neighbours
Silkie Chicken

Our new neighbours have chickens in their backyard. Sometimes they fly over the fence and wander around our backyard. While visiting with the neighbours, Coleman chased the chickens in between jumping on their trampoline. As you can see after several tries, Coleman caught one of the chickens. This one is a Silkie chicken; they are known for their fluffy, silk-like plumage. They are flightless, but they sure can run when being chased by a little boy.

Preston Collins

& Shark Attack

On Saturday, we went to the Carolina Speedway to watch the Monster Truck Wars, America’s Wildest Monster Truck Show. Coleman didn’t know he was going until we arrived at the dirt track that he was going to be able to see the Monster trucks live and in person instead of on the television. (He loves Monster trucks and Dinosaurs, so this was a big win for him.)

Preston Collins
(Shark Attack Driver)
and Coleman

After the show Coleman was able to meet a couple of the Monster Truck drivers; including Preston Collins, the driver for Shark Attack. Preston Collins, 24 years old, is a monster truck driver out of Liberty City, Texas. He has driven several monster trucks which include:

His Monster Truck driving career began in January of 2023. He currently co-drives Shark Attack with  Kayley Engstrom. They share full duties of driving Shark Attack regular version. Shark Attack is a custom Shark monster truck owned by Michael Harper.

Now that you’ve seen Preston Collins and Coleman and found out a little bit about him, let’s show you some of his actions while driving Shark Attack.

You may have noticed all the smoke coming out of Shark Attack, he was allowed to show off his freestyle skills before the final face-off. Shark Attack was loosing momentum and engine power. By the end of his run his engine blew and he was not able to continue to compete in the final round of the competition. (Coleman thoroughly enjoyed watching all the monster trucks, but was enthralled with Shark Attacks actions, jumps, and spin-wheeling.)

Monochrome Madness #54: 2026.02.26 — Sauntering here and there within close proximity to home

Sauntering within 10km or approximately 6.214 miles from home found us heading towards the underpass and around the downtown area of Cramerton.

Starting out what we first observe is the Norfolk Southern chugging down the track …

Let’s see how observant we can be as we begin our crazy adventure …

Next we observe and admire the Veterans Memorial in Centennial Center …

And finally, stop and be observant of beautiful flowers … oh how the blossoms and brighten our crazy days.

I captured this Lent Lily with my iPhone in February of 2024 (during the Lenten season) at The Schiele Museum of Natural History. It was growing in The Farm area near one of the historic cabins.

Salvia rosmarinus

Rosemary

Rosemary is a fragrant herb from the mint family grown in The Farm at The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Rosemary grown in the Garden in the Farm has several qualities that are beneficial for the Garden and the Livestock living in the Farm.

  • A Natural Pest Repellent to keep mosquitoes and cabbage moths away
  • Boosts health in crops like sage and cabbage
  • An aromatic, woody, low-maintenance drought-tolerant evergreen hedging
  • The aromatic stalks can be used in chicken coops to reduce insects
  • The leaves can be fed to livestock in small quantities to boost immune systems
  • It invites beauty and life into the garden by being a magnet for pollinators. It attracts bees, honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
  • It can be added to feed for cows, goats, sheep, and pigs as a natural phytogenic feed additive.

How do you like to use rosemary? Do you plant it in your garden? There are many benefits of rosemary not only the health of farm animals, garden plants, and it has benefits for your health as well.

Which Way Challenge 2026 CWWC: Any Which Way displaying Winter or Summer

Welcome back to the Which Way ChallengeThis Week’s Which Way Challenge are theme is Any Which Way Displaying Winter or Summer. They can be Any Which Way on any Road, Pathways, Walkways, Sidewalks, Stairs, Trail or Dirt Path etc. as long as your Which Ways are clearly visible. As always signs are welcome anytime.

In our neck of the woods, we are in the midst of ongoing back to back winter storms. North of the I-40 usually gets hit with Snow ❄️ during the winter months, but south of the I-40 rarely receives more than a sprinkling or trace of Snow accumulation on the ground. This year we have been hit with an extreme Winter Ice Storm followed by an extreme Arctic Winter Snow Storm and winter is not over so there is opportunity for chances of more ice, sleet, or snow before the season is over.

This past weekend the Snow was packed on top of the ice that hadn’t had a chance to melt yet. This made the road (the one next to the railroad tracks) an excellent place for some neighborhood fun. Two of the neighbour families had sleds they brought out and invited Coleman to sledding with them. So naturally, I bundled him best I could (he didn’t have any snow pants, overalls, or any kind of snowsuit) and we met the neighbours at the corner by the tracks.

Here are a few examples of the Funtime Coleman enjoyed playing in the Snow ❄️ …

This was Coleman’s very first time to go sledding. (Pull Up a Seat on a Sled) In between runs the boys enjoyed throwing snowballs at the adults and Riley’s older sister. A wonderful good time was had by all.

The #Flower Hour #16 — Eruca vesicaria – 2026 February 06

Looking back to February 2024, I took several shot of flowers in the garden at The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Aka Rocket

The Garden in the Farm at The Schiele Museum is filled with vegetables and flowers each year. New plants are planted from starters at the home of the Farm Caretaker and planted into the garden beds at the Farm. The vegetable plants and flowers are a beautiful sight to behold. The flowers are pollinated from the bees from the hives in the Farm located adjacent to the flower beds.

Aka Arugula

Before researching this plant, Eruca vesicaria, I had no idea that it had multiple common names including Rocket, and Arugula. I knew that Arugula is a green often used in salads, which when eaten has a slightly bitter taste. Arugula is a herb from the mustard family (not a lettuce even though I previously thought it was).

Which Way Challenge 2026 CWWC: Any Which Way (Your Choice) [01.30.2026]

Welcome back to the Which Way ChallengeThis Week’s Which Way Challenge are theme is Any Which Way (Your Choice). They can be Any Which Way on any Road, Pathways, Walkways, Sidewalks, Stairs, Trail or Dirt Path etc. as long as your Which Ways are clearly visible. As always signs are welcome anytime.

This week we have been inundated with below freezing temperatures and extreme winter weather inhibiting our ability (too cold for us to go walking about outside) to adventure on an enjoyably beautiful hike. (Sorry, not sorry, below 20° or slightly above with the feel like temperatures even lower is not my cup of tea). These are from what we saw from Winter Storm Fern

Welcome back to the Which Way ChallengeThis Friday’s Which Way Challenge theme is  CWWC: Any Which Way with People . Your Which Ways can be Any Which Way on any Road, Pathways, Walkways, Sidewalks, Hallways, and or Stairs, etc. as long as your Which Ways are clearly visible.

First off, Happy 2026 Everyone! Did you stay awake to bring in the New Year? Did you watch any Fireworks? My daughter and I somehow managed to barely stay awake till midnight to see the New Year arrive. The only fireworks we say were those on the television as the annual ball dropped from New York. We did hear them in our location prior to midnight, but did not venture out anywhere in the chilly night air to watch them being shot off over the ocean.

Here are my contributions … These are a continuation of Cramerton’s Christmas Parade.

2025 Macro Monday: 22 December

Ipomoea pandurata

Aka Indian Potato; Man-of-the-Earth;
Manroot; Morning Glory;
Wild Potato Vine; Wild Sweetpotato;
Wild Sweetpotato Vine

The Wild Potato Vine is a perennial, deciduous, tenacious flowering vine similar to Morning Glory and Sweet potato vine. It is native to North America and grows primarily in South East Canada to Central and Eastern United States of America. It is showy with large heart-shaped leaves, purple stems, and white flowers with pink to purple centers.

An interesting fact is that the Wild Potato Vine roots are used by Native Americans for poultices, infusions, read for treatment of a variety of medical problems. The roots can be eaten cooked, but raw, are a purgative. (A purgative has a strong laxative effect.)

2025 RDP: Sunday —Infructescence

Cluster of Bald Cypress cones

These Bald Cypress trees are resilient and have the ability to grow in very wet conditions, even standing in water. These are grown near the South Fork Catawba River in Riverside Park and Greenway.

The Cypress cones are the reproductive structures of Cypress trees that develop from the tree’s flowers. What you see here are the female cones, often called seed cones. The little red droplet on the bottom cone looks like resin which is characteristic from a cypress tree.

The Cluster of Bald Cypress cones you see is a perfect example of an infructescence. These cones are actually modified seed cones, and once they mature, they’ll release seeds. It’s interesting to learn how plants develop these unique structures to disperse their seeds. The mature cones contain seeds that are a very important food source for local wildlife, including squirrels, waterfowl, and other birds.
