2026 CFFC: Inventions Throughout Time

Dan Antion from No Facilities the host of Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge (CFFC) has chosen to start a new series of related themes dealing with Inventions and Gizmos. He is starting the new series for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge with Inventions.

Here is what I have discovered …

Beginning back in my timeline of inventions …

1956 Videocassette recorder
invented by Ampex

Let’s look back a bit before my time …

NCR Mechanical Cash Register

The National Cash Register Company (NRC) was founded by John H. Patterson in 1884 in Dayton, Ohio. He pioneered the mechanical cash register to stop employee theft.

And even further back …

Letterpress on the
USS North Carolina

The letterpress printing machine was invented way back around 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany. The letterpress printing machine enabled mass production of books, revolutionizing the spread of information. It was a dominant printing method for over 500 years.

Quote by Charles Kettering

On to other inventions seen at various museums …

Robots anyone?

Early Robots as seen in The Discovery Center in Abilene, Texas in March of 2020.

The Joe Steinlauf Bed Bike

The Joe Steinlauf Bike, often referred to as the Bed Bike, is on display (at least it was in August of 2021) at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina. The Bed Bike is an unconventional contraption designed by using a metal headboard.

“One rule of invention;
before you can invent it,
you have to imagine it.
By James Gunn
Olympia typewriter

The Olympia Typewriters were produced by the German company Olympia-Werke AG (founded 1903 in Wilhelmshaven). This typewriter was donated to the St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum (St Simons, Georgia) in 1970 by Eileen Humphlett. It was one used by the author Eugenia Price.

One Day Back in Time …

… We Visited A Bronze Statue

on a Lusciously Green Lawn

One day back in Time my daughter and I took a vacation to meet some cousins in Ohio.

One day our one of our cousins took us sightseeing. On another day, we visited Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) as a perspective future college for my daughter to attend.

One day we walked the vast campus viewing the luscious Green lawn with a fascinating Bronze statue called “Circle of Friends.”

Circle of Friends Statue
by Gary Lee Price
COTC
Newark, Ohio

One day we learned that the circle represents the world coming together, ‘paws’ clasped in friendship and unity.

One day we were fascinated by Price’s use of one animal from each of the seven continents, representing the entire world and our need for interaction and cooperation.

One day we interacted inside the circle joining in with the “Circle of Friends.”

One day I pray the world will come together in friendship and unity interacting and cooperating with one another peacefully.

Taxco Mexican Grill

Over the weekend my daughter treated us out for supper at the Taxco Mexican Grill. This was a new (to us) location of the Mexican restaurant chain. Normally Coleman won’t eat meat except for vegetarian “meat.” However, he decided he wanted to try the grilled chicken strips off the kids menu and loved them.

Salvia rosmarinus

Rosemary

Rosemary is a fragrant herb from the mint family grown in The Farm at The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Rosemary grown in the Garden in the Farm has several qualities that are beneficial for the Garden and the Livestock living in the Farm.

  • A Natural Pest Repellent to keep mosquitoes and cabbage moths away
  • Boosts health in crops like sage and cabbage
  • An aromatic, woody, low-maintenance drought-tolerant evergreen hedging
  • The aromatic stalks can be used in chicken coops to reduce insects
  • The leaves can be fed to livestock in small quantities to boost immune systems
  • It invites beauty and life into the garden by being a magnet for pollinators. It attracts bees, honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
  • It can be added to feed for cows, goats, sheep, and pigs as a natural phytogenic feed additive.

How do you like to use rosemary? Do you plant it in your garden? There are many benefits of rosemary not only the health of farm animals, garden plants, and it has benefits for your health as well.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

Or maybe even today …

We have had a few weeks of freezing weather producing Ice and Snow storms with little sight of the Sun.

Sunrise 7:21am

So far when the Sun has tried to peeked through the rain clouds have covered it up.

Hopefully the Sun will bring a little warmth to our area. However, even though 45°F is warmer than our freezing 9°F lows it is still not what I consider a warm day.

Which Way Challenge 2026 CWWC: Any Which Way displaying Winter or Summer

Welcome back to the Which Way ChallengeThis Week’s Which Way Challenge are theme is Any Which Way Displaying Winter or Summer. They can be Any Which Way on any Road, Pathways, Walkways, Sidewalks, Stairs, Trail or Dirt Path etc. as long as your Which Ways are clearly visible. As always signs are welcome anytime.

In our neck of the woods, we are in the midst of ongoing back to back winter storms. North of the I-40 usually gets hit with Snow ❄️ during the winter months, but south of the I-40 rarely receives more than a sprinkling or trace of Snow accumulation on the ground. This year we have been hit with an extreme Winter Ice Storm followed by an extreme Arctic Winter Snow Storm and winter is not over so there is opportunity for chances of more ice, sleet, or snow before the season is over.

This past weekend the Snow was packed on top of the ice that hadn’t had a chance to melt yet. This made the road (the one next to the railroad tracks) an excellent place for some neighborhood fun. Two of the neighbour families had sleds they brought out and invited Coleman to sledding with them. So naturally, I bundled him best I could (he didn’t have any snow pants, overalls, or any kind of snowsuit) and we met the neighbours at the corner by the tracks.

Here are a few examples of the Funtime Coleman enjoyed playing in the Snow ❄️ …

This was Coleman’s very first time to go sledding. (Pull Up a Seat on a Sled) In between runs the boys enjoyed throwing snowballs at the adults and Riley’s older sister. A wonderful good time was had by all.

Oceans One Resort

When we were at Myrtle Beach for New Year’s, I captured some of the resort buildings views facing the ocean. Yes, I was also fascinated by the Ring-billed gulls soaring through the air. However, looking closely I also noticed the sliding glass doors facing the ocean. [Our room only had a side view of the ocean, not a full straight-on view.]

2026 LAPC #380 – Around the Corner (at the Beach)

What we saw as we walked out of our hotel room and walked onto the beach to observe the Atlantic Ocean was different and unique to our surroundings. It was the first time for Coleman to visit the beach and step into the Atlantic Ocean. I hadn’t been to this beach since 2010 or any other beach since 2020.

Here are a few interesting finds seen on our walk the day after New Year’s Day.

Our first sighting after walking out of the hotel …

The outdoor pool area
with plenty of places
to Pull Up a Seat.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the outdoor pool areas were closed for the season (unheated & closed).

The Pirate Shipwreck
Lagoon Kids’ Waterpark

The outdoor pools and kids shipwreck area would not be comfortable to get into without any heat during the wintertime. Moving away from the pools here’s what we discover next …

Coleman checks
out the “Dolphin,”
a unique design
for a trash receptacle.

The next thing Coleman spots is the beach access, and away he goes …

Coleman headed
out to the beach

Once out onto the sandy beach, Coleman turns left to see what he might discover.

Naturally, Coleman
is anxious to discover
what he might find.
Maybe some Seashells?
Mostly broken,
but a few
whole Seashells

We walked quite a ways down the beach before turning around. Coleman was enthralled with watching the Ring-Billed Gulls (just known to him as Seagulls). Here are a few of our Gulls sightings …

And how can we not watch the waves rolling in and out of the Atlantic Ocean, you can’t go to the beach and not . Can you?

We hope y’all enjoyed walking along Myrtle Beach’s Seashore with us.

2025 SYD: 15 December

Clare from Clare’s Cosmos invites everyone to join her in Sharing Your Desktop (SYD). Below are her suggestions for participating in the Share Your Desktop Challenge .

To do so, simply share the photo (not a screenshot) you have set as your wallpaper; Provide as little or as much detail as you wish; Use a pingback, or post a link here so I know you have joined in on the fun; Then finally, share the fun around.

I am sharing my Wallpaper from both my Laptop and my Smartphone. I enjoy looking at different images each month. Most of which revolve around Coleman (my grandson) and nature.

I will only be sharing a small portion of my Desktop/Wallpaper images that I am seeing. The reason being I have been required to not post any pictures on any form of social media at this time of our newest family member, aka my new granddaughter.

2025 Monochrome Madness (MM) — Scenes from a Playground

Schroering Forest Playground

Anne Springs Close Greenway

Good Day! This being an off week for Monochrome Madness I am doing my own thing, not following with Sand patterns or fence posts like Leanne or Brian. Hope you will not tire of seeing my grandson, Coleman.

Today I am continuing the Coleman’s adventures in the Greenway from his birthday adventures. After cooling off in the Spillway, it was drying off time which (for Coleman) meant playtime in Schroering Forest Playground.

The Schroering Forest Playground is nestled amongst trees a short distance from the Domtar Forest Porch (featured here) where we relaxed sipping cool refreshing water.

Climbing Structure
for ages 5 and Up

The climbing structure is Coleman’s favourite area to play in the Schroering Forest Playground. He has always loved to climb and is not afraid to climb anything (even though, I think his mom is sceptical). She’s probably worried he’ll fall, however, I’m not worried he climbs anything and everything anytime anywhere.

The Schroering Forest Playground was constructed in the Lake Haigler Entrance to Anne Springs Close Greenway in 2024. The intention of this unique playground is to reteach children how to play in the woods.

A mom (aka Coleman’s mom)
watching her son
enjoying the Playground.

The playscape and structures are specially crafted to help activate sensory skills, foster creativity and problem-solving through free play, reduce stress, increase physical activity, develop confidence in the outdoors, improve cognitive abilities and facilitate outdoor learning. Key features of the Schroering Forest Playground include a central climbing structure for older children and a corresponding structure for younger guests.

I’ve been taking Coleman to play in the woods and interact with nature since he could walk. He prefers being outdoors and in the woods over being in the house any day. He enjoys hiking all the trails in Anne Springs Close Greenway and if he can combine hiking with playing all the better as far as he is concerned.

We begin our journey in n July of 1972, having made it from California to Georgia we stop for a bit of fun. We were glad to pull into the park and finally be able to get out of the car and stretch our legs. After traveling cross country for days we were more than ready to enjoy some fun and excitement.

Driving into Stone Mountain Park

We enjoyed a time of Sun, Sand. and Water Fun relaxing on the beach.

Sun, Sand. and Water Fun

Next, we moved forward to wait our turn for a ride on one of the Paddle-boats. The paddle-boats are large Riverboats which give tourists and guests a thirty minute ride out on Stone Mountain Park Lake. [From what I have discovered, the Riverboats no longer operate on Stone Mountain Park Lake.]

🚢 ride.

Moving forward out into the lake aboard the Scarlet O’Hara, we had an opportunity to see a uniquely captivating side of the park. The Scarlet O’Hara was one of two (2) paddle boats in the Stone Mountain Fleet that once cruised the lake delighting guests with the beautiful scenic views. It was a side wheeler which could carry up to One Hundred Fifty (150) passengers on board.

Scarlet O’Hara

The Henry W. Grady was the name of the other Stone Mountain paddle boat. It was designed to carry approximately three hundred (300) passengers. Its sole purpose was to be used for private party charters.

The Riverboats departed the Riverboat Marina Complex approximately every half hour moving forward into the lake giving guests a chance to enjoy the waterways, and the beauty surrounding Stone Mountain. The short cruise lasted about twenty (20) to thirty (30) minutes. While out on the lake on one of the paddle-boats you might have noticed the sunken remains of the very first riverboat, the Robert E. Lee, seen at the bottom of the lake.

2024 CWWC: Which ways with snow or the color white

I have not seen any snow recently or in the past year, so I am going to let y’all see some of the WHITE which I have seen along the various trails that Coleman and I have hiked in 2023.

First up is a hike with the Anne Springs Close Greenway Hiking Club where some of the hikers are wearing white. Everybody was not ready for the photo; I like to catch people unaware when I can. you may also notice the white in the Archers Loop sign and the white clouds in the sky. It was a beautiful, picturesque day.

Next up is the white Riverwalk Bridge as seen from the Piedmont Medical Center Trail that we have hiked with the hiking club and on our own. Coleman loves to hike along the Catawba River whenever we get the opportunity.

Below is capturing a hike we were able to do with Coleman’s mom and sister. It is near one of the locations his mom works at sometimes. Here we are on the Baxter Village Trail, a part of the Carolina Thread Trail System.

This next trail is one Coleman and I hiked on our own. I parked at the Boulder Access Parking lot, and we found the entrance to the trail. We hiked approximately two and a half miles before we turned around and headed back to the car. The trail goes on for miles crossing from North Carolina into South Carolina. We were not prepared to go that distance on this hike.

For another hike we stopped at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden to hike and enjoy the many marvelous flowers grown there. This is the covered walkway leading into the gardens. Notice the vines growing around the white pillars and Coleman trying to balance on the brick edging along the walkway.

Lastly, I know you cannot see the trail, but I wanted to leave you with a beautiful white flower of Queen Anne’s Lace to enjoy.

2023 CMMC: December — Pick a Topic from my Photo

Cee’s Photo

Greetings, Christmas Day maybe over , but not necessarily the celebrations and we still have the new year a coming. Since we’ve been sick and not out much I’m choosing to make my selections from the last time I was able to get out ( this respiratory infection, RSV, doesn’t seem like it was to disappear.)

I’m taking you on a walk through The Farm ( one of Coleman’s favorite places) at The Schiele Museum of Natural History.

Entering The Farm

2023 December 11 — Broken Windows

Southern Industries Mill
Clover, South Carolina, USA

Former Southern Industries Mill in Clover, SC was a Yarn Spinning Mill that closed in 2007. This was originally built in 1923 (per tax records) as part of the Hampton Spinning Mill (until 1945), then American Thread Company until 1985.

In 1945, it was home to the American Thread Company.

This abandoned mill was one of the last textile mills in South Carolina to fall, following a long line of closures throughout the second half of the twentieth century as competition from foreign countries like China and India crippled an industry that once dominated South Carolina’s Upstate. Called Southern Industries of Clover, its doors closed in 2007.
